Weird overbet on the flop multiway…

300bb effective with main villain

UTG limp, Hero raises UTG+1 5bb, CO, BTN, SB, and UTG all call.

Flop is Qc7d2s

SB and UTG check, Hero decides to check range, CO checks, BTN overbets the pot for 45bb.

SB and UTG fold: what should Hero’s continue range be considering he is raising linear and checking all hands.

5-bet Jam range facing a 4-bet committed size in a wide-vs-wide-vs-canyon squeeze spot

Live, 250bb effective

CO raises 6bb
Hero BTN raises 18bb
BB, vpip 90% including cold-calls, also has a linear raising range, calls 18bb
CO raises 103bb

Assuming read on BB is correct and their money is essentially dead money, what should a 5-bet jam range look like from the BTN in equilibrium? From an exploitative perspective, what would your range be for:

  1. A Thinking LAG who notices BB VPIP.
  2. A splashy rec
  3. A nit
  4. A new player

The Radical Decision to Sit at a Table and Stay in the Seat in LA

One of the crazy things in LA that I’ve been noticing since I’ve started playing again is just how often players seem to request table changes, seat changes, and sit out if VIP is taking a break. It feels endemic to every player type in LA. Euros looking to bum-hunt. Superstitious regs looking to get the “hot seat.” A bunch of immigrants/foreigners of the same ethnicity waiting to sit together and breaking the “English only” rule like it’s no buddy’s business during hands. Weirdo musical chair games where a player will trying to go to the best player’s left, and then that player will hop-scotch to go to their left, etc.

I was initially confused by the mandatory-go-South on table changes in LA, because it absolutely isn’t the rule in LV. But, Holy Lord, thank god for that. If the bumhunting is already this bad in LA, the LV bumhunting going on with the aspirational pros must be insane.

For me, my mentality is that every player has leaks, I’m here to get experience playing against every player type, I don’t care who sits with me, I think I’m better than at least 2/3rds of the table all of the time and the ones that are better than me, I can watch and learn. Literally the only time I request a seat changes is occasionally so I can get a more ergonomic/visible seat.

How to handle tilt after players acting out of turn dramatically affects hand

I’m glad that I’ve evolved past getting mad about results of hands these days. A lot of the bad beats and losses to questionable preflop hands don’t faze me as much anymore, but I legitimately need some advice about handling the tilt when players acting out of turn or accidentally mucking hands face up preflop affects my action.

I had a PLO DBL BD Bomb Pot last night at the Hustler. $1000 effective. 8-handed, $200. I’m on the button.

Board 1: KdJs9d
Board 2: Js9h7d

Checks to LJ, who gets $100, CO calls.

I wake up with AcKcQsTh. Nuts with broadway redraw and a pair on one board, wrap on a rainbow board on the other, and I felt that if players who VPIP’d postflop had stronger hands, I would have seen more money in the pot already. I pot it. Folds to UTG +1, who hasn’t folded, when both LJ and CO fold out of turn. UTG +1 tanks, and then decides to fold, says that he would have called if he thought the players behind might call, and the other players fold per binding action.

Like, yes, I don’t have the greatest hand in the world for these flops, would much rather have QT + something that could draw to a flush or a boat, and I’m betting to deny equity more than anything, but given how badly players can get their money in live (like a QT with no redraw, or T8 with weak redraws probably calls off), I felt that money was left on the table.

I don’t call the floor or anything, but I just got immensely tilted after that. End up playing a few hours more, but I know for a fact that the tilt made me play hands more suboptimally and I want to own up to it.

In these situations, when should I just call the floor? When it happens multiple times? Should I just go outside and take a breather for a little bit? How do you handle these situations emotionally?

Grinding blackjack for comps?

Back in December, I met an older gentleman visiting from the South at the $1/$3 poker table at the Bellagio in Vegas who seemed to be what I’d describe a “getting rich the Dave Ramsey method.” He was a lifelong educator who was living off of a generous education pension, diligent investing into index funds in tax advantaged retirement accounts, and a wife who was doing the same. Said he had a house paid for, and everything. Based on what I can tell from the advice he gave on finances, I have no reason to believe him otherwise. Honestly, pretty cool guy and something I aspire to as I get older (I’m 30).

One of the very interesting things to me though is that for someone who basically was an incredibly responsible person financially, is that he was also a very proud member of Caesar’s comps tiers (I don’t recall the exact tier, but I remember “Diamond something” being mentioned). He says that he has been a high-volume blackjack player for a long long time, and says that he basically has been playing optimal blackjack at some of the casinos in the South in large volumes, so much so that Caesar’s comp’d his hotel room for the Palace and basically funded a lot of his trip to Vegas. He says that while he figures that the casino has still made money off of him, the comps have felt very generous and he has enjoyed himself immensely in this hobby.

Is there a strong history of this being something that gamblers do on occasion? Are there terms for this type of gambling? Have to figured if the people who do this are happy? Just curious.

Short-handed Live Overbet Bluff-Catching?

Details

$5/$5, $750 effective
3-handed, straddle on the button

Folds to BB, raises to $30.
Hero on BTN/straddle, calls with As7d

Flop comes Ad, Jd, 3s

BB bets $30, heroes calls

Turn comes 2d

BB bets $60, hero calls

River comes Ts

BB bombs it for $500

Main questions are:

  1. Would solvers have calls here that are not flushes?
  2. Which flushes should I play passively? Mostly King-rag high flushes?
  3. Is my thought that TP+ diamond blocker is a better call than a non-diamond set or 2P theoretically sound?

So happy to see Santa Monica get so much positive press in the media right now

Seeing a lot of great energy in Santa Monica in local and international press alike. The City seems to have figured out how to do big events and hopefully that can bring the energy needed for the offseasons to come.

What should I do vs an OMC cold 3-bet when flatting would guarantee a multi-way pot?

I was at Hollywood Park last night and I was put in a very weird spot, and I was wondering how to go about it.

$5/$5, effective stacks is 200b. Main villain in question is the an old-man-coffee who has been running like god, flopping/turning sets and somehow still getting paid by bluffers and calling stations. Incredibly passive preflop (he has flatted ISOs, PFRs, and 3-bets with TT-QQ/AK), and very trappy post-flop, in that he will play a street with nutted value passively, and then at some point bomb it with value in an unorthodox manner. When he has non-nutted/vulnerable value, he tends to play it more aggressively post-flop. His stack is currently sitting at 600bb. I've played about 4 hours with this guy, haven't seen a single 3-bet.

  • I raised from the HJ with a standard opening range of like 77+/suited broadways/ATo+/KQo for $25,
  • CO, unknown, stack size around 50BB, calls
  • SB, the OMC, raises to $80
  • BB, 200bb stack, who has been very loose preflop and post flop, cold-calls the 3-bet.

This is basically as "inducing action with AA" 3-bet sizing as I've ever seen. My question is: what is my 4-bet range? Folding range? Calling range? Calling here would make it certain to go multi-way, where I'd be in-position against the strongest range preflop and can at least evaluate. On the other-hand, the OMC could also be doing this with a polarized range: on winner's tilt, with a table that is a bit afraid of getting into big pots with him, and deciding to get out of line. And then I'd also risk allowing BB and CO to see a flop with relative wide ranges.

My OMC ranges would be:

  1. 4-bet: KK half of the time, AA
  2. Flat: TT-KK, AK, AQs,
  3. Fold: 77-99, all other broadway combos

My usual ranges would be:

  1. 4-bet: QQ+, AK
  2. Flat: 99-KK, ATs+, KQs
  3. Fold: 77-88, all broadways

What do you think?

Don’t worry guys, candidate for City Council Derrick Townsend is about to release this super special crime database that gives us the *real* crime numbers

We are so ready to move past an era of “suicidal empathy” and to a new era of “compassionate sociopathy.” /s

If Lana Negrete ends up trying to build a slate with this guy, she deserves to lose in November.

Mina Kimes, ESPN newscaster and winner of Celebrity Jeopardy, donated her $1 million prize to SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, a charitable organization cofounded by mayoral candidate Nithya Raman in 2017

As someone who is a big fan of Mina Kimes, I didn’t know that she had such deep ties to the LA community like this. Or how SELAH was part of Nithya Raman’s journey to run for City Council.

EDIT: here is their website which has links to a lot of 3rd part orgs that audit their transparency and finance.

This is Derrick Townsend’s, candidate for City Council, first “Thread” post

“Suicidal empathy” is certainly a type of terminology that I don’t have great associations with, to be understated.

Feels like there are a lot more FP&A roles now than anything related to accounting

Currently looking for work in LA right now, and it just feels like there are a ton more FP&A roles hiring at this point than private accounting. Maybe it’s just the timing of the post 4/15 layoffs, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it does feel that finance-related roles are less likely to be offshored these days because of how forward-facing the roles tends to be with non-financial stakeholders in the company than accounting is these days? Maybe I’m just talking outta my butt.

As a Vietnamese American, pretty cool to see a Vietnamese coffee shop open in Santa Monica. I genuinely wonder how well it is going to do because the diaspora isn't in the westside, but basically everywhere else in the city.

Serves a lot of Vietnamese-styled drinks like egg-cream coffee, banana coffee, and the ol' reliable Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk.

From what I can tell, Measure LC and FAA consent decree means that Santa Monica will have the *right to* close the airport by December 31, 2028. But are the plans set in stone? Should we anticipate that this will require another ballot measure to finalize the future of the airport?

Just been noticing a *lot* of buzz surrounding the airport. The 67% in the picture references a poll sponsored by an anti-closing org and the article from SMDP that discusses it has like 200 comments.
