Do people do much plant swapping ? Or are there any groups out there for plant swaps?

Got an allotment plot about a month ago and was speaking to one the other residents that the whole allotment land is on a slope. Our plot is towards the end so water will run down it through normally in nov. We are thinking to create like a trench to divert some the water around the plot but wondering if anyone in a similar situation or is smarter than me that has a system to collect water in this scenario so we could store it in a waterbutt?
