Environmental Work in Chicago?

Hi all! I'm looking to move to Chicago with a friend, who's starting a master's at Northwestern's Evanston campus, and a third roommate. I graduated with a degree in Wildlife Bio and Env. Studies two years ago. I've had internships as a naturalist, ecologist, and social media intern (for a wildlife education company). I also worked as a forestry research technician for almost two years and now I'm a fisheries surveyor!

Before anyone says I'm limiting myself by looking specifically in Chicago and the job market is terrible, I KNOW. Everyone knows finding a job in pretty much every field, and every city, is difficult rn. So please be constructive with your comments.

Anyway, back to the main point, does anyone know of opportunities or places to search? The Chicago Botanic Garden has great positions, so I'm applying for those. I've checked out friends of forest preserves, Student Conservation Association, and the field museum (which will be too far from Evanston), and they've all come up short.

I'd love to do something in education, conservation or urban planning, and compliance. I'm not too picky though; I'm cool with anything that would give good experience. If not that, then ig there's always retail which sucks but it's something I have experience in. Thanks guys!!

Moving to Chicago and Finding a Career

Hi everyone, I'm moving to the Rogers Park area (north of central Chicago) and wondering if anyone knows of job opportunities, has recommendations for orgs/companies or has experience working in Chicago. My friend is starting her master's at Northwestern, needs a roommate, and I'm just down for a new adventure. My current fisheries temp position is also coming to an end in September, and I have no reason to stay in my tiny rural town.

I'm aware that the job opportunities available there will be vastly different compared to the rural places I'm used to working in, which is fine. I'm still in my "figuring it out" phase, so I'm interested in trying essentially anything. So far, I have worked in forestry as a smoke chaser and a climate change research tech, parks as an intern naturalist, ecology as a research intern, and now fisheries as a surveyor.

General summary about what I liked/disliked about those positions: As a naturalist, I loved working with the kids, educating people, researching/developing my own education programs, and being outside part time and inside part time. It's by far my favorite job I've ever had. The research I did in ecology and forestry was, even as a tech/intern, incredibly rigorous, physically taxing, and I felt like I was losing my mind because everyone else around me seemed to love it. Smoke chasing and forestry are also just not my thing, not really interested in it. Fisheries has been cool so far, but I think it's just because I like the people, not really interested in the work itself.

Now I'm interested in compliance, education, outreach, conservation planning (or maybe urban planning since it's obviously a city), and advocacy. I'm hoping to find something part time or seasonal, so I can (hopefully) get a part-time job at a music venue or studio. I also want to try World Packers or WWOOFing in the spring/summer, so I don't want to take a full-time position and get stuck there or burn a bridge by quitting.

I've applied to a position with the Green Corps as a campaigner and other positions in the area I've seen are very similar. I'm interested in those, but I'm also wondering if anyone has other suggestions. Any advice/help about work in the area is appreciated and general career advice is also super helpful, thanks guys!

Looking for an apartment in Rogers Park AND a third roommate

Hi everyone! My friend (27F) and I (24F) are currently in MN working in crunch time to find a 3-bed/1+ bath place and another roommate in Rogers Park. We're looking for a year-long lease starting in September. Our budget is $2,500 ($850 per person) but flexible, we’re hoping to be close to the Red or Purple Line, and I have a cat, so it needs to be pet friendly. Ideally the place would have in-unit laundry and a dishwasher. We’ve found some potential places already, but that’s the gist of what we’re looking for!

Rooming vibes

We like to create a warm and welcoming environment where we can hang out with our roommates and have small get-togethers. We also cook, thrift, and go on little adventures together. We are respectful of each other’s spaces and like to maintain a clean, smoke-free place.

A little about me: I’m pretty social and love to make new friends, but I can also be a little quiet when we first meet. In my free time I like going to the gym, being outside, hanging out with friends, going out, and doing anything music related. At home you’ll often find me listening to music, podcasts, or watching my fav youtube channels. And like I mentioned, I have a cat! He’s very friendly and loves attention.

My friend's about me: I’m queer and neurodivergent. Some of my hobbies are Latin dancing, spending time with friends, going out in nature, and playing soccer, hockey, and video games. I love making connections and getting to know people. I am also an early bird and don’t do a lot of partying.

Comment or send a message if you’re looking for roommates and have similar preferences! Also, if anyone has suggestions for how to find roommates and housing, or just general advice for Chicago transplants, we'd appreciate any help.

Where my Geese and The Strokes truthers at? (solo traveler)

Hi y'all! I'm a 23F who so desperately wants to attend the whole weekend, mostly to see Geese, The Strokes, and Cage the Elephant. But I love all kinds of music obvi, so I'm planning to binge every artist's discography in the lineup, lmk if you want the playlist when I'm done lol. Anyway, I'm having a hard time convincing my friends to go (they're mostly pop girlies). I would maybe go by myself, but I've never been to a festival, let alone solo. I'm also from rural MN and not used to the big city vibe so I'd love to go with other people to feel more safe and comfortable. (I haven't bought tickets yet, but I plan to get the 3-day GA tickets.)

A bit about me: I like to smoke more so than drink, I'm pretty chill and silly. I've been told I can be kinda quiet/reserved when you first meet me but when I'm excited/anxious I can be super yappy.

This is kind of a tangent and I know other people have made very similar posts, but I've been staring at tickets like every day and just need someone to go with to actually buy them. Pls comment and DM me if you're also looking for a friend or just wanting to meet more people!!

Lonely lil Yebba fan

Hi everyone! This is super last minute but maybe it'll reach someone :)

I'm going to the Yebba show at the Varsity theater in Minneapolis this Sunday. I'm super excited to see her, the only thing is that I'm going alone. This isn't a problem or anything but as an anxious person, who's never been to a concert alone, I'm a bit nervous! Plus, I think it'd be fun to meet some new people. I'm generally (i think) cool, kind, and funny (again - i think). If you're interested in making a new friend lmk!
