Stayed in a hotel
I stayed in a hotel for work over the weekend to go to a training conference. The hotel had cable tv and I had some downtime and just flipped through and had it on while studying in the hotel room. I don't usually watch cable TV and I don't really know anybody who has it.
Anyway one of the channels was HGTV. And I guess one or two of the shows on it follows average looking couples and families as they look for housing.
And that's when I realized that myself and pretty much every family that I know is a poor.
Pretty much everybody on the TV shows has a "budget" of like 400,000, 500,000, sometimes 750,000 or more. And the houses they look at in those ranges? Like... I guess?
Im working pretty hard and have very little debt and between my 3 jobs I am in an "ok" apartment in an alright neighborhood, and i try to live frugally.
Is just like everyone a millionaire now except me and my friends? Or are these shows geared toward an audience of millionaires? And if it is are there enough millionaires watching to justify such programming?
I figured it was just one or two shows like this but it seemed to be over the whole range of shows that they televised, this is pretty normal. I feel like it would be more resonant with me and my peers is to see a house hunt in the price range of 90-120k (tops).
Anyway I finally just got depressed and turned it off and the thought of getting depressed by watching TV motivated me more to study..
As i travel home i am musing:
- I will likely never own a home, strictly due to the cost.
- If it were ever to happen, it would be due to sheer luck, like being able to snag some affordable plot of unattractive land at a foreclosure rate, and saving several years to buy an old trailer or shipping crate and eventually make it into some sort of dwelling with reudimentary plumbing and solar power.
... Anyway, I am eager to get back to work tomorrow so that I can help everyone but myself get more wealthy.
