The beginning of an ice age ?
Upon rewatching the show I noticed clues that could indicate that Kipo's world is starting to enter an ice age.
- Firstly, the Narhartz and the Mega-Walrus. Although they come from animals living in the Arctic icy ocean, they can be found in the waters around Las Vistas (which is supposed to be near Los Angeles), which could mean that the sea have become colder and tolerable for their species.
Secondly, in "The Ballad of Brunchington Beach" Dave says that he stayed 25 years in a Mega-Chicken's stomach just because it was "chilly outside". And although Dave is not the most reliable narrator that exists, the fact that he mentions this example may suggest that Las Vistas experienced a cold wave that lasted throughout this period (probably just after the Great Mutant Outbreak).
Thirdly, In the concept art and script by Rad Sechrist, about his Wolf Movie project, a new faction of mutes is introduces: the Deer People. These deer live in snowy lands and their cultures revolve around the cold, which could simply be the result of living much further north where winters are harsh. If only a detail: The other characters always describe their territories as being cold and snowy, as if trapped in a perpetual winter.
- Fourthly, Las Vistas itself. As mentioned above, Las Vistas is based on Los Angeles, a rather dry Mediterranean forested environment. However, in the show, Las Vistas seems to be quite humid (with the exception of Cäctustown), and although this could partly be explained by the intervention of the Mega Castors when they created Skyscraper Ridge and thus huge wetland areas, it is still interesting to note that during the last ice age, California had a temperate and humid climate, as evidenced by the traces of pollen found at the La Brea fossil site, which, by coincidence, is located in Los Angeles.
