Flat Feet / Valgus Ankles — Can Orthotics /PT Still Help?

Hello everyone,
I’m really grateful to have found this community, and I truly appreciate anyone who can help. My heart goes out to all of you dealing with this as well.

Recently I went to an orthopedic doctor because of foot pain. He prescribed custom orthotics and diagnosed me with “valgus feet / ankles collapsing inward” and “fallen arches.”

In your opinion, does my case sound very severe? Is it something that can still improve with orthotics and physical therapy, or does it already seem like surgery will eventually be necessary?

My follow-up appointment with the orthopedic doctor is only in a few weeks. Right now I’m still getting used to the orthotics — I bought a Brooks Ghost 17, but I’m not really sure whether the orthotics are helping yet.

Thank you so much, everyone!!

Adjustment/adaptation with insoles + better shoes for insoles

Hi everyone,

I recently went back to work after being inactive for months due to an accident, and I’ve started wearing my custom orthotics for flat feet/overpronation for longer hours again.

I’ve been using them with a stability shoe (Kayano 31), but my feet have actually been hurting even more since returning to work. I’m starting to wonder if the combination of stability shoes + orthotics might be overcorrecting my gait.

For those who wear custom orthotics:
do you usually pair them with neutral shoes?
And from 1 to 10, how intense was the pain/discomfort during the initial adaptation period with orthotics?

I’d really love to hear real experiences/recommendations for shoes that work well with custom orthotics.

Thanks!!
