I picked 2830 Cigarette butts today, most of them in front of the hospital entrance...

Today was 'NoButtsDay', a day where we (in the Netherlands, but hopefully also in the rest of the world) pick a lot of butts and because we do this, it attracts newspaper etc and we use this momentum not to fight smoking, but to fight the plastic in butts.
So today i cycled a bit in my town and every now and then i stopped and picked some butts.
But my goal was the entrance of the hospital because it is a non-smoking area.... (?)
And indeed.
Today i picked 2830 butts and most of them in front of that hospital, just before the imaginary line where the non-smoking area starts.
next to benches, in the gardens, everywhere.
It sounds like a lot (and it is), but still it is nothing compared to the 17.000.000 that were dropped today in my small country.
Anyway, it beats doing nothing, i guess.

Another 529 items stopped from going into the ocean

Today i had some time left, so i went to the Noordzeekanaal which is the canal that ends in the Noordzee (Nordsea at the coast of the Netherlands.
It is a spot which i 'adopted' so every now and then i go there and try to clean a bit of it.
Today i cleaned some 10-20 meters, and it is just a meter wide, big rocks and between these rock there you can see it, plastic cups, bottles, pieces of styrofoam, anything that floats towards the sea but is being pushed on the rocks by the waves that ships make and then they just lay there, waiting till the break apart and can wash through the rock to continue their journey.
"A drop in the ocean" maybe, but ah well, it was a nice day for it, and i guess it beats doing nothing :-)

The Dutch PeukMeuk is going worldwide: No-Butts-Day. July 4th 2026.

The PeukMeuk, (which translates to something like 'cigarette butts rubbish' is a Dutch initiative where we pick butts on 1 special day in the year.
The idea behind it is to make it to the news and make people aware that butts consists out of plastic and it is not something that you throw on the ground with the idea that they will simply disappear.
Although the Netherlands is small, it is calculated that each day 17.000.000 butts are thrown on the ground PER DAY so we are fighting for a ban on butts in the Netherlands.
It is a hot topic and it is moving from 'the Netherlands' to 'Europe', but of course this is a worldwide problem (and yes, i realize that most countries of course have much bigger problems to deal with) and The PeukMeuk is going global. No-Butts-Day.

On the 4th of July volunteers in the Netherlands are going to pick butts and at the end of the day, the volunteers report the number that they picked to the initiator of this event.
Last year that was 964.000 butts which is an enormous amount, but well, also a drop in the ocean compared to what was added that day...

Together with some other volunteers, we use LitterApp.net to register the litter that we pick, so we also use LitterApp to register the butts on that day and for each year we create a dashboard where we show all butts that are picked on that day.
They are automatically counted and shown on the map and that is the number that we report.

Now i was wondering, since the event is going global, do you want to be part of this?
We are not going to change the world by doing it, but like we always say 'every bit counts' and the same goes for every butt.
So if you like, feel free to contact me, and i will think about how we can get this to work. (Even if you just pick 1, it would be fun to be able to show your effort on the map.
You might need to make an account for it (and would be good to try with a test-photo first because there are some ways to select your photo from the phone and in some cases the gps is lost, but we can figure that out, still plenty of time.
But you don't have to create an account if you don't want to, you can also pick as much as you want and take 1 photo of the total, and you can send that photo to me (if possible also the gps-location where you picked them (just some rough indication) and i can upload them for you.
Well, that's details, we'll figure that out, this is more to see if you would be interested in taking part on July 4th, and willing to pick 1 butt (or many).

Regards,
Fred

I did a cleanup this morning, 561 items removed,

Today i joined in a municipality cleanup and it was bad!
So much litter, it was depressing.
I always take pictures of the litter that i pick, but i also took some 'before' and 'after'.
At some points i was like 'let's just move on and forget about this place, but in the end we cleaned a lot of places like this and it feels good,
even though some people say the same litter will be there before the end of the week.
Might be true, but hey, at least we did something about it while all those people just walk by...

(By the way, all those pieces from the broken mirror just count as one ;-)

Weekly Impact

It's Monday and that means that we always look at the stats of last 7 days.
There we can see trends, for instance less cans being found in the Netherlands because of deposit, or more vapes being found because the smoking companies are pushing them into the marked etc.
We also have 1 dashboard that shows the numbers:
How many photos did we take, how many items were on them, and how many tags were given to those items.
And for last week, that looks like this:

Well done all, thanks!

100 meter done, 70 kilometer to go

Once a year there is a cleanup where we clean the rocks next to the water.
That is about 70 kilometers long and a lot of volunteers take part and do a bit.
Lovely work, but if you do 1 piece of it, you will notice that the piece that you are assigned to (some 4 kilometer) can never be cleaned in those couple of hours on that day.
So we decided to 'adopt a spot' and now we try to keep that bit clean.
The part we clean is some 500 meters long, and each cleanup we do a bit.
Right now we finished the entire bit, so today we (a friend of mine and I) started at the beginning again.

We did some 50-100 meters, and although i am still tagging the pictures that i took, i think it will be close to 1000 items.
In total 55 kilo. (Not including a large piece of wood with rope).

A drop in the ocean maybe, but not doing anything is not an option.

Picking litter while riding my bike :-)

https://preview.redd.it/djeeppcfai6h1.png?width=1144&format=png&auto=webp&s=b0e03ee5ae1112548e276ff3974e5f7a614d6194

Even when you are riding a bike, you can still pick litter 😄
Today i went to work by bike, (has been a long time since i did that, i normally go by train, but due to circumstances i got an e-bike which should make it easier to cycle that road 2 times in 1 day and also do some running with some colleagues so i decided to give it a try.
I prepared my bike (holder for my phone in the front, plastic bin attached to the rear and some extra things to be able to bring lunch, laptop, running gear and other stuff and time to put it to the test and it was a success.
It is my first e-bike and i definitely drive faster than what i used to do, and i think it is a bit higher, so i had to get familiar with the way to grab litter (i missed a lot and was a bit 'afraid' to reach the hard to get places which i would always try on my old bike but nevertheless, just cycling, no stopping, just trying to grab whatever i could and put it in the bin in the back...
Some 35 items on the way to work, some 45 items on the way back to home.
Like I said, i missed a lot of items, but will try to catch them next time 😄
The green 'line' are the items i picked today, the other colors are items i picked longer ago, while walking or running.

Japan is also on the map!

As of today, Japan is also highlighted on the map.

Constance was in Tokyo today, saw litter on the ground (a can) and took a picture of it.
It can now be seen on our map and in our special dashboard that we created for Litter All Around The World.
Grafana

Still many countries to go, but 1 down!
(By the way, it is not to show that those countries have a litter-problem, on the contrary, it is just for fun to see if we can get 1 (recognizable) litter-picture from each country)

The dashboard is empty again, a new month started so we cleared the dashboard, ready for a new one!
Go to litterapp.net, scroll down to the 7th tile ("TreasureHunt") and there you will see the list of items that we are looking for this month and the scoreboard and map that will automatically be filled if you tag your item with the extra 'Event-tags'.
Happy Hunting!

Deposit works!

During my cleanups, i find a lot of interesting stuff which i keep apart (for instance lighters that are not empty yes which we re-use) or bicycle-lights that still work and also deposit cans and deposit bottles. (Yes, deposit works, feel free to ask me about my experiences, there are some issues that come along with deposit, but don't let anybody tell you that deposit doesn't work).

One of the items i also find, are specific cups from the McDonalds.
And in the Netherlands we have some different kinds:
The paper ones (with plastic inside), you pay extra money for those,
The 'normal' plastic ones, you also pay extra money for those,
The hard-plastic ones that are supposed to stay inside the McDonalds and that are re-used over and over,
And you have the hard-plastic-deposit ones.
So if you buy something 'on the go', you can get the paper ones, for which they charge you extra, or you can ask for the deposit ones, you pay 1 euro deposit, which you will get back if you bring them back, so no extra charges like for the paper ones.

But still, every now and then, along my walks, i find those deposit cups.
I take them home, wash them and plan in bringing them back some day...

And that day was this week, i was going to make a long walk, and i would pass by a McDonalds, so i took the cups with me, went into the shop and gave them back.
They checked if they were all deposit (which they were) so i got 12 euro deposit.
Thanks to those who litter...
