Sligo Creek Parkway open to traffic

Anyone know why they left at least some of the segments they normally close on the weekends open to traffic? Do they not close them during heat emergencies?

Reality Check

The discourse on here about the election seems a little unhinged, I really think people need to step back a bit in terms of what this actually means. Here's my take:

  • Ultimately Jawando is a status quo candidate, so for the most part stuff will just continue on the same trajectory. Despite what you read from some people here, MoCo is clearly an attractive and desirable place to live, and will almost certainly continue to be so. I personally think we can do better than this sort of stagnation and so did not vote for him, but our starting point for stagnation is still pretty nice. That's why housing prices are so high. MoCo is not and will not become some sort of dystopian hellhole.
  • The main downsides from my perspective are less chance for more housing to be built, a greater likelihood that taxes drift up without a proportional improvement in services or infrastructure, and possibly some stalling of the decline in crime we've seen in the past 2 years (though very much unsure about that last one as predicting crime trends is extremely hard, but at a minimum I don't think Jawando's leadership will be pushing the needle in the right direction). This would all be IMHO unfortunate, but none of it is disastrous.
  • Unlike DC, where the Council is basically 100% strong progressives, the MoCo Council has a number of more moderate members. So the changes that can enacted by having a more progressive Executive are not at the same level as the potential situation in DC with JLG. DC is going to be much more interesting to watch in terms of potential radical change, MoCo is going to be pretty boring.
  • Julie Yang seems like someone to watch, my sense is she had a lot of support on the BoE and has a potential lane as an effective moderate at higher levels.
  • Ranked choice voting seems like a no brainer. I seriously doubt it would have mattered given the margin, but I don't see any downside.

It's not the result I personally wanted but it's going to be fine.

Completely Insane Statement on Housing Development from County Council Candidate

I truly could not believe this response to the question "Do you believe housing development can be effective in addressing the local housing affordability crisis" from at large candidate Dana Gassaway:

"I have to state this clearly; WE CANNOT BUILD OUR WAY OUT OF THIS HOUSING CRISIS!!! Excuse the emphatic nature of my reply, but I wonder what are we, as the residents of Montgomery County, trying to create? Residents must understand that we are fifth in area and first in population; additionally, we have developed 85% of the land in our county, and we are 800 people per square mile away from having a high-density county. We are at a pivotal point and must decide if we want a crowed county or not. I think the best option for us as a county is to make our young so employable, through education, that they will be in high demand nationally and our population will reduce that way naturally."

Literally just saying the best solution is for young people to just all leave! Usually the de-growth, screw-the-next-generation stuff is just implied, rather than stated so clearly.

(By the way the correct answer is from Scott Goldberg: "Increased housing supply is absolutely the solution to calming housing costs in Montgomery County.")

Weekend Safety on the MBT

Not looking for a big policy debate for this post. Just want perspectives. I recently got a cargo e-bike and have a decent route to get on the MBT. Primary use would probably be on weekend mornings with my small children on the back. There are lots of reports here and elsewhere of incidents of teens assaulting people on the trail, but it sounds like this is usually around evening rush hour/school release. So I wanted to get a sense of whether folks who frequent it have a sense of the likelihood of an incident on a weekend morning.

I bike commuted on the MBT a decade ago so it's not like I have zero risk threshold, but I am much less risk tolerant with my kids in tow and haven't been on it since Covid so want an updated perspective.
