Is it regular practice for a clinic to pay the MT for just the hour hands on massage time but expect them to pack up/down with no pay for it?

Also there is no sick leave, annual leave, superannuation pay... This is in Australia. The MT is really just self employed and renting space which is a fair enough set up.

BUT - when the clinic set the prices, takes 50% of the cost (really more when they expect you to pack up and down for free) and dictate your hours with very little notice just whenever someone books in could be in an hour or in a Saturday, it seems like a very raw deal.

My question is the title. Turned in to a bit of a vent. How do things shake out for you all and which location are you in?

There doesn't seem to be much advantage to working in a clinic instead of working for yourself..

drying laundry - towels, sheets - is it necessary to use a dryer or is hang drying ok?

I'm wondering from a hygiene pov. The only thing I found was that if they are line dried in an area with a lot of pollen then clients with allergies may be irritated. But I don't see this as a prob for me.

I prefer to just buy more linen so I can line dry it all and am able to wait the longer time for it.

Any probs with this you can think of?

Massage Practices taking shortcuts with linen

Has anyone encountered this? I recently have and I'm not comfortable with it but I know the cost of it can jack up biz costs a lot. I wonder if it's common out there? Basically reusing the same towels for clients. Maybe flipping them.. Any other shortcuts w this people come across?

Interested to hear people's intel on this, including travelling to India/ anything entailed with it.

UK MTs: How's business for you right now? Has it held? Dropped?

  • What area are you in?
  • Is what you're earning from full/ part time work?
  • Is what you earn supporting you £ wise sustainably?
  • Do your client's get health insurance rebates or MT covered by NHS/ anyone in any way?
  • What are your insurance costs? (or do you not pay any?)

Things are getting so strained economically everywhere. And reports from the UK sound so dire..

3rd time trying to post this. Reddit filters/ mods please tell me what is wrong with it if is removed please

Added most in terms of:

  • boosting income
  • adding to your skill
  • or just interested you the most

I'm looking around at what I can add to my core training and there are so many courses out there which are the best ever according to those selling them. It would be so easy to drop $$$ endlessly without any proper recoup of investment.

Some further questions:

  • is there a modality you managed to figure out pretty well without taking the official training for it? How did you do that eg read particular books? Get treatments in that modality? These modalities are just brand names for variations on techniques. You're paying for the brand name when you take their official training. If you can largely learn it yourself you can save a lot of money. Hands on practical skill is important but as MTs working in the field this is something we have experience and get practice in.
  • what is the cheapest/ quickest extra training you know of that isn't a waste of time?
