Why are women more interested in true crime than men?
Disclaimer that plenty of men consume true crime content, and plenty of women play gory/violent video games. I am making generalizations here based on research studies that show trends.
I listen to a couple of true crime podcasts, and several of the hosts have made comments about how their viewers are like 70-80% women, sometimes even higher. This trend seems to persist even if you step outside the “feminist, female driven”true crime shows that have female hosts who give a very female perspective on the crimes, it persists to other true crime shows like Dateline and 48 hours, which are narrated from a more gender neutral perspective. (Dateline has a viewer base that’s estimated to be 64.2 percent women. Psychology Today gives a rough estimate that women make up about 60-80% of true crime content consumers, if you estimate the average between podcasts, shows, YouTube channels, blogs, etc.)
Also, male consumers seem to prefer gory/violent video games over women (though this gap is shrinking, I feel), so why do they have no interest in true crime?
