150 days of building a self-hosted personal finance app in the open. Here's where it's at.

Hey all,

I wanted to share Sumurai, a free, stylish, self-hosted finance app I’ve been building in the open for the last ~150 days. You decide how you want to connect your accounts, with several options based on your privacy preferences, which should cost most people very little or nothing at all.

I’ve been programming for 10+ years, mostly for small and large businesses. I originally built it for my own small business. I wanted something where I could control my data, that worked great on any device, and surfaced trends in my business spending without a lot of manual labor. I even worked with a local artist to create the brand assets, light and dark themes, and the samurai.

It's kinda taken a life of its own and thought other people might get some use out of it. It would be useful for people who want more control over their financial data and tooling, while still keeping the app practical enough for everyday budgeting and transaction management.

Wouldn't mind a bit of feedback either, especially if there's an obvious gap I'm missing.

Hey all,

About 150 days ago on a Reddit post, I shared Sumurai, a free, secure, Bring-Your-Own-Key (BYOK) self-hosted personal finance app I originally built for my small business: https://github.com/TwoBitFoundry/sumurai

The response was surprising and generous, so I wanted to come back with where it's gone.

It's at V7 now across 100+ releases, and it's been reworked from the ground up with a new look, powerful new insights and graphs, and support for 3 new connection options other than Teller: Self-managed (DIY), SimpleFIN (Private-Focused), and Plaid (Organizations). Works for personal, investment, loan, or business accounts. Each provider has its own terms and data policy you'd consent to, of course.

Transactions got a big boost in workflows as well, supporting merchant normalization, auto-categorization, import/export options, and customizing categories. Subscriptions and bills automatically get shown in a new Fixed Expenses section under Budgets.

You'll also find full PWA support with optimized layouts for desktop/tablet/mobile and passkey support. If you want to see what's new before diving in, I put together a V7 writeup with screenshots of the new dashboard, insights, and transaction views: https://github.com/orgs/TwoBitFoundry/discussions/174

I've been programming over 10 years, mostly for small and large businesses, and the goal hasn't changed: build something useful in the open, collaborate with others, and mentor devs newer to the field.

There will always be a free self-host and modify for your own use option, source-available under the Sustainable Use License.

Whether you want to collaborate, contribute, or just give feedback, I'd love to meet you.
