Stairway to Tragedy: How Poor Urban Design Leads to Death

Just so the tragedy of this accident doesn’t fade from the news without prompting any meaningful change, I wanted to document and understand it better. I didn’t get the chance to be at the scene while it was active, but enough has been released to see some obvious problems that go well beyond “who’s at fault.” My infographic tells most of this story.

The victim was a man in his 20s, a student at USD. Like most universities, it’s surrounded by the medium- to high-density housing where students live. Conveniently, there’s a long ramp and staircase down from the grade level of the campus to the street near 5800 Linda Vista Rd. At around 1:30 a.m., an SDPD officer in a marked patrol car traveling westbound struck the student, who later died at the hospital.

A note on what we don’t know: the investigation is ongoing, and there are factors in this collision none of us can see from the outside — speed, attention, visibility, what the officer and the student each did in the final seconds. This is not a verdict on fault. It’s about the conditions that were fixed, visible, and fixable long before 1:30 a.m.

Sorrento Fire Pics

A vegetation fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2026, in open space north of Sorrento Valley Boulevard and south of E. Ocean Air Drive in San Diego. SD Slackers documented a multi-agency aerial response on scene — county and city helicopters plus Cal Fire fixed-wing tankers, including the newly stationed Ramona C-130H. Per Watch Duty, citing incident command, the fire was knocked down by late afternoon at roughly 90 acres and 20% containment, with most evacuations lifted, three zones still under order, and crews expected to remain at least 24 hours.

Derailment Shuts Down Harbor Drive Near the Port

[SAN DIEGO (Downtown) Sat June 6, 4:00 p.m.]

Three rail cars derailed Saturday afternoon beneath the Harbor Drive overpass just south of Park Boulevard, coming to rest against a bridge pillar and closing the waterfront arterial to traffic. The rail cars were automobile transport cars, which did not appear to be loaded.

The cars left the tracks about 4:00 p.m. on the freight line that runs under Harbor Drive, roughly 650 feet south of the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge. No one was injured. The locomotive that was pushing the cars to the south had been disconnected and was parked by the convention center.

"I'm Too Far Gone": Inside the Two-Hour Search That Failed

New details: SDPD had been looking for the 17-year-old shooter for almost two hours before the first 911 call from the Islamic Center.

His mother called at 9:42 a.m. to report him missing — suicidal, with guns from the family safe and her car gone. A note left on his computer reportedly said, "I'm too far gone and this is going to happen anyways."

SDPD put out a countywide BOLO at 11:04 a.m. flagging a "possible terroristic threat" and described the white BMW X1 he was driving. They used their ALPR network and got one hit in Fashion Valley. The first 911 call from the mosque came at 11:43 a.m.

Five Killed at Clairemont Mosque, Including Two Teen Suspects

[CLAIREMONT, Mon May 18, 11:30 a.m.]

Five people are dead after a mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Eckstrom Ave. this morning. Three victims were killed inside the mosque, including a security guard. Two suspects — ages 17 and 19 — were later found dead in a white BMW on Hatton St. after firing on a gardener over on Salerno St.

SDPD was on scene in under 4 minutes and did not fire any shots. A massive multi-agency response followed, with BearCats and SRT teams clearing the building while families waited at the tape for hours hoping for word on loved ones.
