Low PREP score, board exam in a week!

Hi everyone, I’ve scored low on my PREP self-assessment exams (2024 55% and 2025: 60%). I’ve finished MedStudy once and currently done 30% of my second round. Finished MedStudy flashcards! Is this normal for prep questions? Should I repeat them again or focus on MedStudy?

Is Hospitalist and PCP the same for J1 waiver?

Hi, I’m planning to do hospitalist waiver after residency. Does it take priority similar to PCP for waiver? Or is it considered similar to Conrad30 for subspecialty? I want to apply to Michigan for waiver

Why I didn’t match despite hardwork? Is it due to Visa requirements?

Hi, I’m a hardworking graduate from pediatric residency. I’ve don a lot of work during my three years of residency, did 3 peds cardiology projects (research, MedEd and QI projects) has already 6 publications from med school. I have 2 years additional experience from my home country before doing residency in the US. My program has peds cardiology fellowship and I had good CVICU experience. I did an away rotation at one of the top institutions in the country and I had four strong LOR from my department.

I was hoping to match at a top tier program but I didn’t! I’m on J1 visa, I applied to 40 programs and got 15 interviews. Only 4 programs were top tier. I ended up matching at a small program!! Not even my own program

I kept thinking about the possibilities, all the cardiology attendings at my program knew me before the interview except the PD because she was on a leave when I did my rotation but my mentors told her about me. The second thing is that I did not ask for LOR from my away rotation given that I already has four and lastly one of my mentors who knows me well mentioned that I would like to go back to my home country in one of the letters (but it was a strong letter)

Can you help me thinking through this? I’m now thinking of quitting fellowship after completing first year and do the J-1 visa waiver and apply again after 4 years when I have green card. Is it worth it? Would that change my chances? Is it the visa or me? Why after all this work did not even match at my own program!

Changing Fellowship Program

Hi, I started recently my fellowship at one of the programs that is not supportive. Everything is not well organized and chaotic, from clinic to lectures to even parking!!

There is a nee opening spot at a better program that I want to apply to it but would my program allow the transition? Anyone been through the same process? I don’t have a valid reason to move except that I’m looking for a better program

Quitting vs finishing a year of fellowship

I need to quit fellowship to do a J1 waiver due to financial reasons. I’ve just started fellowship recently, until I find a job and complete the waiver application process this might take 4-6 months. At that point, is it worth it waiting those 6 months until finishing first year ACGME fellowship? Or should I just quit and get the benefit of 6 months of attending paid salary?

Quitting fellowship?

Is there any legal obligations from ECFMG that would prevent me from quitting fellowship to do waiver? If my program did not allow it what would be the result of that?

And if I applied for a job secretly and waited until my waiver got approved before disclosing with my program, is that okay? It would be risky to disclose that early and facing the risk of termination for replacement since we are new for the fellowship

Risk of not getting J1 waiver

Hi everyone, Given all the immigrations laws that are changing lately would you recommend doing the waiver ASAP?

I recently finished pediatric residency and started cardiology fellowship. It would take 4 years to finish the fellowship and the 4th sub-fellowship year. I’m afraid of the limited jobs and the possibility of immigration law changes and I’m thinking of doing hospitalist waiver now then do fellowship after.

Cardiology is my passion but my priority is to stay in the US as I can’t afford going back to my home country now. What would you suggest? How hard it is to find LORs and apply to fellowship after 4 years of hospitalist?

Peds Hospitalist lifestyle vs PCP for J1 waiver

I’m a fresh graduate from residency and planning to do peds hospitalist J1 waiver. Would you recommend doing PCP or hospitalist for waiver?

I’m still planning to do fellowship after the waiver so both of them are not my passion but my goals are; improve my financial situation (given all the current stressors), getting green card to get better work job opportunities in future, being able to travel easily. What do you advise to choose?

Quitting fellowship for J1 waiver!

I started fellowship recently and currently facing financial and family challenges which requires me to do the waiver before fellowship. Would it be hard to apply for fellowship after the waiver?

It’s one of the competitive peds fellowships, but since overall peds fellowship is not as competitive as IM how hard it would be and would you guys recommend?
