Registered for FRM Part 1 now confused about materials, mocks, and whether I need coaching. Need honest advice.
Hi everyone,
I recently registered for FRM Part I, and honestly I’m feeling quite anxious about how to proceed. I really don’t want to mess up this attempt, and I’m okay with spending money on coaching or extra resources if it genuinely improves my chances.
As of now, this is what I have access to:
- GARP official study plan / learning objectives
- Some older Schweser notes, mainly 2023
- Some older QBank / question material from AnalystPrep and Bionic Turtle
- GARP practice exams / pre-study material from previous years
- Access to a course/study plan, but not necessarily the full latest official books
My main confusion is:
- Are older Schweser 2023 notes still usable for FRM Part I, assuming I cross-check with the latest GARP learning objectives?
- Is it risky to rely on older QBanks/mocks, especially since FRM questions seem to have become more conceptual and less straightforward?
- Should I buy a coaching subscription mainly for:
- updated notes,
- good lectures,
- a strong QBank,
- and multiple mocks?
- Which provider would you recommend if my priority is passing comfortably, not just barely clearing?
- How many mocks should I realistically take before the exam?
- What should my mock-score target be before I can feel reasonably confident?
- Is it better to spend more time on concepts first, or should I start doing questions/mocks early and learn through them?
I’m not looking for shortcuts. I’m willing to put in the hours. I just don’t want to prepare the wrong way using outdated or insufficient material and then realize too late that I should have used a better QBank or coaching program.
For context, I want to take FRM seriously and ideally clear with a strong score/quartile. I’m especially worried about whether just reading notes and doing old questions will be enough, or whether the exam now requires a much more updated and conceptual approach.
People who recently cleared FRM Part I or are preparing seriously — what would you do in my position?
Would you recommend:
- self-study with Schweser/GARP + old questions,
- buying a full coaching package,
- buying only a QBank/mock package,
- or using something like Bionic Turtle / AnalystPrep / Schweser / any other provider?
Any honest advice on how to structure preparation, when to start mocks, and what mistakes to avoid would really help.
Thanks in advance.
