My layman‘s pop-history understanding of the military situation is that the general consensus was that Soviet ground forces could crush the opposing NATO forces handily in a purely conventional confrontation.
I can guess at a thousand reasons military people in the West would have liked voters and policymakers to believe this, so I’m wondering how and whether it aligns with actual strategic assessments.
