Meet the Autofocus Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.7 for Nikon F-mount (Screwdrive).

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a project that’s been keeping me busy at the workbench for a while. As many of you know, the legendary Carl Zeiss Planar T 50mm f/1.7 (C/Y)* is famous for its incredible micro-contrast, rendering, and sharpness. But for Nikon DSLR shooters, using it has always meant either sacrificing infinity focus with cheap adapters or sticking strictly to manual focus.

Well, not anymore. I have officially finished modifying and calibrating a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.7 converted to native Nikon F-mount with full Autofocus support!

🛠️ How it works:

AF Type: It utilizes an internal mechanical coupling to work flawlessly with Nikon’s classic in-body AF motor (screwdrive / отвертка).

Compatibility: Fully operational on body series like the D200, D300, D7000, D700, D800, D850, D3, D4, D5, etc.

The famous T* coating and optical formula remain completely untouched.

Now, classic Nikon DSLR lovers can finally experience the true Zeiss rendering with the speed of autofocus.

The End of the "Screwdriver" Era & A New Project: Giving Autofocus Life to a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.7 for Nikon F 🛠️

Hey r/VintageLenses!

Today on my workbench (and lathe), I have a very special guest — the legendary Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.7. My next goal is to transform this manual masterpiece into a fully functioning autofocus lens for the Nikon F mount.

I have to admit, starting this project brings a wave of nostalgia and a bit of melancholy. We are witnessing the inevitable sunset of a beautiful era. The age of classic, heavy DSLRs with their iconic mechanical, "screwdriver" AF coupling is drawing to a close. The relentless new "tribe" of mirrorless cameras is rapidly pushing the old guard out, turning once-flagship bodies into relics of the past.

But I refuse to let this legendary glass just sit on a shelf. This new Suslov Lens modification project starts today: a complex "heart transplant," precise optical alignment, and marrying German optical magic with modern electronic lens communication.

For a bit of inspiration, I’m sharing a few test shots taken during the preparation process. They capture that soft magic, depth, and, of course, the distinctive bokeh that makes all this tedious lathe and mechanic work worth it.

What are your thoughts on this hybrid? Should we preserve the classic "screwdriver" mechanical coupling style, or completely modernize it? Let’s look back at the good old DSLR days in the comments.

Autofocus Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 Canon EF - Continuation of the Series.

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share my latest completed project. The legendary Soviet Helios 44-2 has been given a true second life, now featuring fast automatic overdrive and a modern footprint.

This lens represents the perfect balance between vintage optical rendering and modern digital convenience. Here are the key highlights of this modification:

  • The Iconic Rendering: The original Helios 44-2 (58mm f/2) optical block has been carefully transplanted into a new housing. Its world-famous signature "swirly bokeh", classic micro-contrast, organic color palette, and artistic flaring remain completely untouched.
  • Modern Autofocus & Electronics: Driven by a reliable Canon EF electronic system, the lens delivers fast, snappy, and accurate autofocus. It is fully compatible with native Canon DSLRs as well as mirrorless systems (Sony, Fujifilm, Canon RF) via standard smart adapters (the photos show it mounted on a Sony body via a Metabones adapter). Aperture control is fully electronic from the camera body.
  • Precision Alignment & Calibration: The optical core went through meticulous centering and optical bench regulation. This eliminates any field tilt or decentering issues, ensuring crisp center sharpness wide open at f/2 while preserving its unique peripheral character.
  • Ergonomics: Reimagined in a compact, lightweight, and durable body, this lens is a joy to use in fast-paced shooting scenarios where manual pulling would typically cause you to miss the shot.

I've attached photos of the lens build (including the EF mount with gold-plated contacts) along with a few sample images. Take a look at how beautifully it separates the subject, twists the background highlights, and handles textures!

I'd love to hear your thoughts and am happy to answer any technical questions in the comments below. What do you think about this hybrid of two optical eras?

Full Autofocus Helios-77M-4 (Canon EF) — The Swirly Legend Reborn.

Finally finished my latest project: a fully functional autofocus conversion of the legendary MC Helios-77M-4 50mm f/1.8 for Canon EF mount!

This isn't just a simple adaptation. I’ve integrated a modern AF system into the classic Soviet housing, maintaining that iconic vintage aesthetic while gaining full electronic control.

Why the Helios-77M-4? For those who find the Helios-44 series a bit too soft or "common," the 77M-4 is the ultimate upgrade:

  • The Bokeh: It retains that signature "swirly" background, but it’s much more pronounced and artistic.
  • Resolution: It is significantly sharper than the 44-2, even wide open at f/1.8.
  • Multicoating (MC): Greatly improved contrast and better flare resistance compared to older versions.
  • Color Rendering: It produces rich, vivid colors that give photos a unique "film-like" character.

Tested it on both Canon and Sony (via adapter) bodies — the tracking is snappy and the optical results are just magical. The transition from the sharp center to the swirly edges is what makes this lens a portrait powerhouse.

What do you think of this combo? Swirly bokeh with modern convenience — worth it?

The Legend Evolves: Starting the AF Conversion of MC Helios-77M-4 for Canon EF

Hey Reddit! Just wanted to share a glimpse into my latest project. I’m officially starting the assembly of a custom autofocus MC Helios-77M-4 for the Canon EF mount.

Why the 77M-4?

This isn't just your average Helios. It’s the sharper, high-contrast sibling of the famous 44-series. At $f/1.8$, it keeps that iconic "swirly bokeh" we all love but delivers significantly better center sharpness and micro-contrast.

The Suslov Lens Touch:

We’re taking classic Soviet glass and giving it a modern soul. By integrating the optics into a Canon EF 50mm STM housing, we get the best of both worlds:

  • The unmistakable vintage character and rendering.
  • Fast, silent, and accurate STM autofocus.
  • Full electronic aperture control directly from the camera.

The photos show the "surgery" in progress—preparing the optical blocks and electronics for the first AF calibration tests. It’s always exciting to see Zenit optics getting "digital eyes."

Stay tuned for the first AF test results coming soon!

The "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing": My Autofocus Helios-81-avtomat Mod for Canon EF is Finally Finished.

I’ve just finished assembling and fine-tuning my autofocus-modified Helios-81-avtomat for the Canon EF mount.

Unlike the mass-produced Helios-44, this lens features lanthanum glass, which delivers stunning sharpness and detail even wide open. The signature "swirly" bokeh is still very much there, but the resulting image is noticeably cleaner, more contrasty, and has a more "modern" feel to it.

The main reason this lens usually stays under the radar is its quirky mount and specific mechanics. However, after proper adaptation and calibration, it truly reveals its full potential. It’s a real "wolf in sheep's clothing" for anyone looking for that vintage character without sacrificing technical image quality.

I believe even a single frame makes it clear why I'm a fan of this glass. The Helios-81-automat produces the most intense "swirly bokeh" in my experience. It also offers surprisingly uniform resolution across the frame, avoiding the typical corner softening found in other Helios models.

This was shot on a Sony a7 II using a "rough" assembly. The optics haven't been cleaned or adjusted yet.

Helios-81-Avtomat AF conversion project update.

I've got both the Helios and a Canon STM stripped down and ready. Preliminary calculations are done, and it looks like a go. I’m really impressed with the IQ so far—colors and sharpness are top-tier. It’s a mystery to me why this lens is so overlooked.

u/Unique-Somewhere-255 — 19 days ago

Today, I’m kicking off the build for an autofocus Helios-81—a lens that has always lived in that strange, beautiful space between technical hardware, nostalgia, and pure magic.

It’s not just about "vintage bokeh." This glass has a rendering with real personality: soft, slightly nervous, and almost alive. The background doesn’t just dissolve into a sterile blur like modern lenses; it swirls, breathes, and plays with the light. There’s a certain "plasticity" to the highlights—a mix of chaos, a dream state, and old-school cinema.

I’ve always loved that the Helios doesn't try to be perfect. It draws you in through its imperfections: that signature glow, the unique subject separation, the swirly bokeh, and the feeling that the shot was found in a box of forgotten film.

Now, I want to give this glass a new lease on life—adding autofocus without stripping away its soul. Let’s see if I can successfully marry old Soviet optics with modern convenience.

The project has officially begun. More to come!

It’s been a long journey from the initial concept to a fully functional lens. Between the mechanics, the electronics, and the endless testing, every stage felt like a hard-won victory. Now, this classic optical design has a modern mount, autofocus, and a whole new lease on life.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing that vintage rendering paired with the convenience of a modern camera.

An important note: it works perfectly on mirrorless systems via adapters—and honestly, it performs even better there than it does on DSLRs.
All shots were taken on Canon R.

Suslov Lens is starting work on a new lens — the autofocus Triplet-5 100mm f/2.8 for Canon EF.

It will be a modern interpretation of a classic optical design, very close in spirit to the legendary Meyer-Optik Görlitz Trioplan 100mm f/2.8, but with one important difference: autofocus.

Yes, the lens will shoot only wide open, but that is exactly where its character lives. A soft rendering, airy depth, expressive bokeh, and that unmistakable vintage look that can never be fully recreated in post-processing. The Triplet-5 100/2.8 is not about clinical perfection. It is about mood, light, depth, and a truly unique artistic image. A lens for those who are looking not just for sharpness, but for a living, recognizable signature in every frame.

This Helios has been fully reassembled and its optics have been precision-adjusted for better performance. In the Soviet days, these lenses lacked individual tuning, leading to huge quality differences between copies. We’ve fixed that.

With both autofocus and auto-aperture working flawlessly, you can focus on the art rather than the mechanics. Fewer missed shots, better results, and much faster shooting!

Just started a new project: modernizing the classic Helios-44-2 into an autofocus lens for Canon EF.

The goal is to keep its famous swirly bokeh and vintage character, but make it more practical for everyday shooting. This is only the beginning, but I’m excited to see how far this lens can be pushed.

Would you use an autofocus Helios-44-2?
