Hi everyone. i made some more progress on the mTrak tool. it is now buildable from scratch with prebuilt binaries coming up on the way. There is now also a contributors guide on the github and a proper readme. Most functionality is now finished (recently added a mixer tool for global velocity setting), with the exception of some QOL things im still working on (selection and copy paste, and an undo system).

If you are interested or want to contribute you can find it here: https://github.com/TheExiledCat/mTrak

next steps on my roadmap are proper project storage, remappable keybindings and custom themes as well.

on a side note i would love to hear what people would want from a midi only tracker like this feature wise. its based on FT2 but i want to add QOL and more features where possible.

this entire project started because i really wanted a good midi tracker that was simple to use and didnt require an emulator, while being solely focussed on midi (so i didnt wanna lean to renoise, openMPT etc).

Would love to hear what you guys expect from an app like this!

mTrak Midi Tracker

(delete if self promo is not allowed mods!)

I have been working on a command line midi sequencer based on Fast Tracker 2. Is uses largely the same keybinds as ft2 but runs in the terminal so it can be very quickly and easily spooled up on any kind of shell environment, even embedded.

It supports full midi out, midi in is still WIP.

You can send midi out over all 16 channels, spread over 8 tracks which have their own voices. Each track also has custom midi command effects you can use to do things like settings CC, Velocity, or doing glides like portamento, CC slides and more.

The current UI u see in this image is unfnished so theres some empty gaps but the functionality is mostly there already.

I made mTrak because i love tracking in FT2, but FT2clones generally dont support midi, and things like octamed require emulators (or a big wallet). So i felt like making my own (in rust).

I personally make jungle music on hardware and prefer simplicity so i wanted to step away from big daws. So this was the perfect middle ground for me.

The project is open source and will be open for issues and PRs soon: https://github.com/TheExiledCat/mTrak

Hope you enjoy!

Edit: it runs natively on windows, linux and mac by the way! It also doesnt require a mouse as it has full keyboard support. So it can be very easily slotted into a live setting as long as you can send it keyboard info.
