According to researchers at Galaxy Digital and Galaxy Research, an internal build setting bug in Coldcard's firmware caused the devices to bypass their dedicated hardware true random number generator when generating seed phrases.Instead, key generation defaulted to a weak software substitute seeded only by the chip's factory serial number and internal clock registers. This collapsed the range of potential entropy from an astronomical figure down to roughly four billion possibilities on newer models, making seed phrases computationally enumerable and easily brute-forced offline.On July 30, 2026, an attacker exploited this predictability to systematically sweep 1,082 BTC from 1,196 vulnerable wallets within a 41-minute window.
If you own a Coldcard device, applying the latest hotfix is not enough to protect a seed that was generated on vulnerable firmware. Users must generate an entirely new seed on patched hardware. Utilizing a strong BIP-39 passphrase provides critical additional protection.
