Starting at zero characters creation

Hi all, i am looking for some opinions and advice for a idea I'm brewing for my game, for context my game is a rouguelike ttrpg were the players play as ghost that pocess body to explore a procedurally generated haunted megastructure. The idea i have is for the charaters creation were all the players character basically start with no memory's or history. So no class or race or background, a blank slate and after each level they choose a new memory/power (either real or fabricated memory). My intention is to allow players to create a character organically and let them choose what they want to be. Is this a fool errand? Or do you think it could work? Also if there any existing examples of "starting at 0" characters creation?
