i genuinely think we can’t be friends fully saved ariana’s career. the song AND music video completely shifted the public narrative around her after the homewrecking scandal, helping rebuild her reputation while also giving her a much-needed commercial reset after yes, and? underperformed. it became a massive hit and gave her the momentum to prove she could still dominate commercially. what do you think?

ariana has been working nonstop without a second to breathe since positions: BOTH wicked movie press tours, recording an album + all the rollout stuff in between, focker, 2 fucking relationships, a 2-month-long tour, numerous public scandals, and her physical health declining, which is probably a mix of her not being able to properly take care of herself and an underlying issue with food that she likely hasn’t even had the time to properly address. this amount of labor and mental stress would be overwhelming for anyone, and the scary part is that she STILL has more shit to do. she has west end appearances coming up and oh, the places you’ll go slated for 2028. i really hope that after the west end stuff, she can finally take a breather and have some actual time off before press for oh, the places you’ll go.

i think petal has a lot to do with her experiences with fame. i noticed that the melody from her biggest and most exaggerated pop star hit, 7 rings, is woven into the title track, and the music video seems heavily centered around hollywood and commentary on the music industry. based on the lyrics we’ve heard so far, it also seems like fame and everything that comes with it will be a major theme.
the fact that she chose 7 rings specifically is interesting too, considering how much that era represented the peak of her mainstream image and the larger-than-life persona people projected onto her. the teaser almost feels like she’s revisiting that version of herself from a different perspective, reflecting on what fame, success, and the entertainment industry have taken from her as much as what they’ve given her. even the glamorous hollywood imagery feels slightly exaggerated, which makes me think she’s intentionally commenting on the performative side of celebrity and the pressure that comes with constantly being in the public eye.

is it just me or is her energy levels getting higher? she’s doing notes she hasn’t done yet. do we think it could be overworking herself or maybe she’s >!eating at maintenance?!<
