After a very long health battle Ferrari unfortunately wasnt able to pull through this heatwave, despite my best efforts to cool all my snail tanks down, she was already sick and i believe this was the final straw.
Trigger warning, the rest of this post will mention runt culling and sickness. Originally I didnt plan on making this post but I feel like she was the perfect example as to why finding ethical breeders is so important with african land snails
At one and a half years old Ferrari never reached past 5-6cm, she had an amazing diet, I was extremely careful with her tank and making sure theyre the perfect size, however she was sold FAR too young and ended up being a runt. She was bought as a gift to me a while after I lost my first ever african snail (he lived to be a little over 8 years old) and, as selfish as this sounds, I couldnt bring myself to euthanise her so soon after my first passing away without trying absolutely everything.
Originally she behaved relatively normal, never showed signs of sickness and seemed to be doing well just slightly weaker than my healthier ones, I kept her alone to make sure my other lissachatina fulica couldnt hurt her, and she looked to be thriving. After a while, due to how poor her shell growth was, she developed chronic fungal infections which never seemed to fully go away, even after slightly lowering humidity, medicating her, providing 3 different calcium sources 24/7 and spot cleaning rotting food/poop daily, the picture used was taken during one of her medicated baths. Soon after that began retracting, going deep enough into her shell that it was near impossible to see her, coming out once every few weeks to eat. In this time I just monitored tank conditions to ensure her environment was correct and allowed her to rest, still keeping food in the tank at all times. The last time she came out i noticed symptoms that matched organ failure, at this point i decided it wasnt worth letting her suffer and the chances of her recovering are slim, especially with how little research there is on treating snails. I got advice from exotic vets and invertebrate rescues to make sure it was the correct choice, and last night put her to rest. She should have been culled before ever being sold, and if i could have changed anything I would have done it sooner, I loved her to pieces and hoped somehow she'd make a miracle recovery but you cant cure genetics.
To anyone planning on buying GALS, especially lissachatina fulica and morphs like jadatzi which are notorious for being poorly bred, please research the places you are buying from and avoid breeders which refuse to cull runts, many online stores will sell snails too young when its impossible to spot future deformities and snails that will never grow properly. I have 3 other african snails, another who is stunted and 2 that are very healthy, both of which came from breeders who I know take care to ensure theyre selling healthy pets. I hope Ferrari can at least help spread awareness on how important it is to responsibly breed these animals
