[8 YoE] Resume review - looking to test the market and move to a possibly greener pasture

I’ve been a full‑stack dev for 8+ years and I’m currently a Senior Software Developer at a FinTech in Toronto. The pay isn’t great and the work has gotten pretty boring — honestly feels like stuff a 3‑year dev could knock out with AI now. I’m trying to move into something more challenging and better paying.

I’ve been applying to tons of roles (remote + hybrid), but I’m getting way more rejections than I used to. I know the market sucks, but I’m also pretty sure my resume needs work. If anyone’s willing to tear it apart and tell me what to fix, I’d really appreciate it.

PS: I took a break between 2023–2024.

Trouble getting reference letter from previous employer — can I still claim this work experience for Express Entry?

I need some help with my situation and would appreciate any advice or suggestion.

I worked full‑time for ~7 months as a Senior Software Developer at**,** let's say abcdconsulting. However, all email communications came from the domain xyz.com. In fact, the work was actually for xyz org (I used to work out of xyz's office, my office specific account, github, JIRA were all under xyz.com) whereas abcdconsulting was just the payroll company.

The offer letter, paystubs and the T4 are all from abcdconsulting even though on my LinkedIn I have listed the experience under xyz.

Now, abcdconsulting is refusing to issue any employer reference letter on their letterhead because they say they are a payroll company only and don't have letterhead; and that xyz won't be able to issue any ref letter either since they don't want to show a legal connection with abcdconsulting.

I have the following questions:

  1. Can I still claim this 7‑month experience for Express Entry using alternative documents such as paystubs, offer letter, T4, screenshots of JIRA and git commits? My offer letter, fortunately, lists the duties I was required to perform as a Senior Dev.
  2. Will the mismatch between employer name (abconsulting) on my documents and the employer name on my LinkedIn exp cause any issues? I have read somewhere that IRCC looks at LinkedIn as well.
  3. I left the org and have been working for another employer who will provide ref letter. In total, if I show 2 years of exp in Canada and let's say IRCC doesn't accept the alternative documents for xyz, will my entire application be rejected or will I just lose the points for those 7 months at xyz?

Thanks for your time
