Handyman to Electrician

Hi electricians

I’ve been working as a handyman for around 8 years and have a physics degree so I know my science and theory. I’m looking to get properly qualified as an electrician and I’m considering doing the Level 2 and 3 electrical diplomas on a fast-track/intensive course.

At the moment I only do the basic electrical work I’m legally allowed to do as part of my handyman jobs. I’ve got plenty of experience with the practical side of domestic work that you don’t necessarily learn on an electrical course — dealing with different types of walls, floors, fixings, access issues and the general problems you run into working in real homes.

Once I’ve done the Level 2/3, how can I go about completing the NVQ without giving up my current work? Could I work part-time as an electrician’s mate/improver to get the site experience and evidence needed for the NVQ while continuing my handyman work?

If I’m motivated and actively looking for the right jobs/evidence, how quickly could I realistically get through the NVQ? Anyone here taken a similar route?

Thanks
