Alternatives for the Edge sidebar
Now that Edge is removing the sidebar in the next update, I've put together a short list of browsers that have this feature, in case anyone wants to switch. I’ll only include browsers that natively support this feature and function as such; I also won’t go into detail about every feature of each browser. So please don’t take this as a ranking of which of the mentioned browsers is the best overall.
1. Floorp
Advantages: Allows you to add multiple sites and keeps the bookmarks bar, history, and notes pinned. You can control which container it goes into, adjust its width, manage audio settings, switch between mobile and desktop views, move it around the screen, and pin it.
Disadvantages: Many settings, including those in the sidebar, are only available in English.
2. Opera/Opera GX
Advantages: It allows you to add social media platforms and AI chatbots like ChatGPT, and it features a native media player and access to your browser history and bookmarks. It also supports auto-hide, and in GX, you can change the icon colors to match the default theme.
Disadvantages: You cannot pin any other site that isn’t in the settings box; therefore, it lacks zoom, back, forward, and mobile view controls.
Although it can be enabled via opera://flags/#sidebar-site-panel, it only allows you to pin up to 5 sites and still has the same issues
3. Vivaldi
Advantages: Multiple sites and shortcuts (history, bookmarks, etc.) that can be pinned, navigation controls, mobile/desktop view switching, the ability to pin and float the panel, auto-hide, and keyboard shortcuts and gestures for controlling the panel. Additionally, it is the only browser on this list that allows you to change the sidebar’s position (left or right).
Disadvantages: None that come to mind.
4. Whale
Advantages: All of the ones mentioned above (except for the ability to change the sidebar's position): autohide, multiple sites and shortcuts, a tools section like Edge, mobile/desktop view, navigation controls, and the ability to run outside the browser. Of all the alternatives, it is the closest to Edge, as it is also the only browser on this list that comes close to the "Edge Bar" experience in Windows 10, which allows you to use the sidebar outside the browser.
Disadvantages: The browser isn't available in all languages, and it doesn't have zoom controls.
