My experience with CHS..
I’m a 20-year-old male who has been smoking cannabis daily for several years.
Last year I had a severe episode of stomach pain, nausea, and eventually repeated vomiting where I couldn’t keep food or water down. I ended up in the ER severely dehydrated. All tests came back normal, but a specialist suspected CHS (Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome). They said that hot showers temporarily relieved the symptoms and that the only real solution was to stop using cannabis completely. After I stopped, the symptoms gradually went away completely within a few weeks.
I was then completely symptom-free for a couple of months and later started smoking again. At first, I had no problems, but after a few months I had another episode, this time coming on faster and feeling more intense. The same kind of severe nausea and vomiting returned, and hot baths again provided only temporary relief.
I stopped cannabis immediately after this, and the symptoms improved within a few days, but I’ve still had waves of nausea and a reduced appetite for about 1–2 weeks afterward.
I have a few questions I’d like to ask people here:
What actually causes CHS? Why do some people develop it after long-term cannabis use while others never do?
Do we know what in cannabis triggers CHS (THC, dosage, frequency, long-term use)?
Has anyone here personally experienced CHS or similar symptoms? What was it like for you?
Last thing I want to say is that it’s pretty clear I got to quit and not start again (been a couple months clean now again) but honestly miss smoking so much and still get psychological abstinens..
