Just a heads-up: watch your accounts

I’ve noticed a suspiciously high number of Reddit accounts getting suspended today, particularly around discussions related to this situation.

One possibility is mass or coordinated reporting. If a large number of accounts are suddenly being reported, Reddit may review those accounts and take action where it detects rule violations.

This is particularly concerning given that management has already indicated that it is pursuing social-media posts related to the situation.

Reddit also recognises abusive mass reporting as a form of report abuse.

So please be careful:

- Don't post personal information or doxx anyone.

- Don't make threats or engage in harassment.

- Don't spam or brigade other communities.

- Keep your posts factual and within Reddit's rules.

- If your account is suspended, appeal instead of creating another account to evade the suspension.

If you were suspended

Check the suspension message in your Reddit inbox. Reddit provides the appeal instructions there. Account-level appeals can generally be submitted within six months of the enforcement action.

Official appeal guidance:

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045734511-My-account-was-banned-for-violating-Reddit-Rules

For spam, inauthentic activity, or ban-evasion suspensions:

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045734911-My-account-was-banned-for-spam-inauthentic-activity-or-ban-evasion

Stay cautious and don't give Reddit an easy reason to suspend your account.

How to stay anonymous while posting

Given the current situation and concerns about people being identified for posting about the incident, please take your privacy seriously.

First, chill. It is generally much harder for someone to obtain identifying information directly from Reddit, Google, email providers, etc. through legal process. Such requests can involve formal legal procedures and may take time. That said, don't assume you're completely untraceable.

In practice, one of the biggest risks is identifying yourself through what you post. People can piece together information across different accounts and communities.

- Use a separate Reddit account that isn't connected to your personal identity.

- Don't use college Wi-Fi for posting or interacting with Reddit. If you're posting sensitive material, use a trusted VPN or privacy-focused connection. A VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity.

- Don't use your real name, phone number, email, address, roll number, etc.

- Don't reuse usernames connected to your personal social-media accounts.

- Be careful about revealing details such as which faculty you studied under, your course, hostel, clubs, hobbies, events, or other unique details.

- Remember that seemingly harmless details across different subreddits can be combined to identify you.

- Check screenshots carefully for usernames, profile pictures, notifications, timestamps, documents, or other identifying information.

- Consider using a privacy-focused email provider such as Proton Mail for accounts where you don't want to associate your normal email address. No provider guarantees anonymity.

- Keep original evidence safely preserved and provide it to the appropriate authorities if necessary.

A throwaway account or VPN does not guarantee anonymity. The safest approach is to avoid revealing information that can identify you in the first place.

Protect your identity, but also follow Reddit's rules and the law.

TL;DR: Please don't get r/vitap banned by Reddit

First, the most important point: we have received direct guidance from a Reddit Admin regarding this situation.

The Admin (Reddit staff) explicitly told us that Reddit does not allow sharing personal or confidential information, including encouraging users to share that information on other platforms. We were also warned that doing so puts the subreddit and users' accounts at risk.

You can read the Admin's response here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/s/M3ulf7csfh

We also asked about the legal side. A lawyer strongly advised moderators not to allow doxxing, even if the allegations ultimately turn out to be true. They pointed out potential privacy, defamation, harassment and intimidation issues, and clarified that a later conviction does not retrospectively make previous doxxing lawful.

https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceIndia/s/EBrFnYw225

About the claims that management controls us

If management was controlling this subreddit, every post would be removed. There would be no criticism, no discussions and no posts pointing out VIT-AP's shortcomings.

And seriously, have you forgotten how openly I have criticised VIT-AP and pointed out its problems without filtering them?

We are not being forced to remove these discussions.

We are trying not to get the subreddit banned.

Discuss the incident. Question the university. Criticize management. Raise safety concerns. Share verified information.

But do not doxx, threaten or target individuals.

We are not protecting management. We're protecting the subreddit so that everyone can continue having these discussions here.

Important: Reddit rules on personal information

I’ve received clarification directly from a Reddit Admin regarding the current situation.

Reddit’s rules on personal information are non-negotiable. This also includes encouraging or directing users to share personal information on other platforms. "See the Reddit Admin’s response here" (https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/s/cEUxdCKIWR)

Because of this, I’ve removed the previous post asking people to move sensitive material to Telegram/Signal.

You can still discuss the incident, ask questions, raise safety concerns, and share non-identifying information here.

If you have evidence involving potential crimes, please take it to the appropriate authorities or legal professionals.

I know this is frustrating, but I’m not going to risk the subreddit or users’ accounts by violating Reddit’s rules.

Please do not post or request personal information here, and do not use the subreddit to arrange off-platform sharing of it.

Need advice from fellow Reddit moderators regarding a serious situation

I’m a moderator of a r/vitap community, and I’m looking for advice from experienced moderators on how you would handle this situation.

What happened

There is currently a serious situation being discussed within the VIT-AP community involving allegations of:

- A girl allegedly secretly recording her roommates and other girls in private situations.

- The recordings allegedly being sent to another person.

- The recipient allegedly using the recordings to blackmail or threaten the girls.

- Students allegedly confronting the person involved in the alleged blackmail.

- The situation then escalating into a large physical confrontation involving multiple students.

- Claims that several students were injured and that a knife was involved.

These are currently allegations and accounts circulating within the community. We are not treating them as established facts unless they are verified through appropriate authorities, evidence, or credible reporting.

The moderation problem

Some members now want to identify the girl allegedly responsible and post her photographs, name, social media accounts and other identifying information.

There is significant pressure from users to "expose" her.

I have currently restricted doxxing and personal information while I figure out what we should do.

The community is understandably asking questions such as:

- How many people were allegedly recorded?

- Are students currently safe?

- What is the university doing?

- Has anyone reported this to the police?

- What actually happened during the violence?

I am not suppressing those discussions. People can discuss the incident, ask questions, share verified information and talk about student safety. The restriction is specifically on identifying/doxxing individuals.

Why I'm being cautious

I initially wanted to understand whether there could also be legal consequences if someone is publicly doxxed before the allegations are proven.

For example:

- Could the accused take legal action over the publication of her personal information?

- Could the doxxing or subsequent harassment become relevant in the criminal proceedings?

- Could it potentially be raised as a mitigating circumstance?

- Could Reddit users or moderators face consequences?

- Most importantly, could allowing this type of content put the entire subreddit at risk of Reddit enforcement?

I have therefore decided to take some time to properly review Reddit's policies and get an informed opinion regarding the applicable Indian cyber/privacy laws before deciding whether images or identifying information should ever be allowed.

What I'm looking for from other mods

How would you handle this?

Would you:

  1. Completely prohibit identifying information regardless of whether users claim it is already publicly available?

  2. Allow discussion but remove names/photos/social media accounts?

  3. Allow photographs if the person is allegedly involved in a serious crime?

  4. Contact Reddit admins for clarification?

  5. Treat this as a situation where the safest approach is to remove anything that could facilitate harassment or targeting?

I'm particularly interested in experiences from moderators who have dealt with doxxing, allegations of serious crimes, campus incidents, ongoing investigations, or situations where a community was at risk of Reddit enforcement.

I don't want to make a rushed decision based on what people on Reddit think the law says.

At the same time, I don't want to suppress legitimate discussion or leave students without a place to talk about their safety.

What would you do in this situation?

Give me some time

What if Reddit bans this subreddit because we allow doxxing?

I don't want to risk the entire community over this. Give me some time to properly go through Reddit's rules and get an informed opinion on the applicable cyber laws before making a decision.

Once I have clarity, I'll decide what we can and cannot allow.

Please be patient in the meantime and don't post anyone's personal information.

Legal advice regarding doxxing an accused person on Reddit

I’m a moderator of a VIT-AP subreddit, and there is currently a situation involving allegations of secretly recording people, blackmail, and a subsequent physical confrontation on campus.

Some members of the community are now asking to publicly identify the girl who is allegedly responsible, including posting her photographs and other identifying information.

Before allowing anything like this, I want to understand the legal consequences under Indian law.

My specific questions are:

  1. If an accused person's photograph, name, social media profiles, college details, or other identifying information is posted publicly on Reddit, could that itself constitute an offence or expose the person posting it to legal action?

  2. If the allegations against her are eventually proven, does that change the legality of having doxxed her beforehand?

  3. Could the accused potentially use the fact that she was doxxed, harassed, threatened, or publicly targeted as a mitigating circumstance or defence in proceedings relating to the original allegations, potentially resulting in a lighter sentence?

  4. Are there specific laws concerning privacy, harassment, defamation, publication of identifying information, or interference with an ongoing investigation or proceeding that moderators and users should be aware of?

  5. Could the subreddit itself be reported, restricted, or taken down because moderators knowingly allow users to post someone's personal information or encourage doxxing?

  6. As a subreddit moderator, could I or the moderation team face any liability if users post such information and we knowingly allow it to remain?

I am not asking whether the alleged conduct itself is acceptable. If the allegations are true, they are extremely serious and should be dealt with through the police and courts.

I want to know whether allowing Reddit users to publicly identify and target the accused could create additional legal problems for the users, moderators, or the subreddit itself.

Depending on the legal advice received here, we will decide whether images or identifying information should remain prohibited on the subreddit.

Please provide legal sources or case law where possible.

Taking This to r/LegalAdviceIndia

Since people here seem to be ignoring the potential legal consequences of doxxing, I’m going to cross-post this situation to r/LegalAdviceIndia.

The question is straightforward:

If we publicly dox the accused on Reddit, could she use the resulting doxxing, harassment, or privacy violations as a defence or mitigating circumstance in court and potentially seek a lighter sentence for the original alleged offences or use any other loophole?

I want an answer from people who actually understand Indian law rather than Reddit speculation.

Depending on the lawyers' responses, I’ll decide whether we can allow images or other identifying information to be posted on the subreddit, or whether it should remain prohibited.

Until then, please do not post her personal details or images here.

Edit:- Also the subreddit can be taken down if we allow doxing

Please do not dox the accused

If you have information about the alleged incident involving the girl who is accused of secretly recording and blackmailing someone, please do not share her personal information, address, phone number, college details, family information, social media accounts, or any other identifying details publicly.

At this stage, allegations are still allegations. Unless the facts are independently verified or reported by credible media based on reliable evidence, we should not turn this into a public witch-hunt.

Doxxing her could also backfire. If the matter goes to court, public harassment or unlawful disclosure of her personal information could potentially be used to portray her as a victim of online harassment and distract from the actual allegations. Let the evidence and the legal process establish what happened.

If you genuinely have sensitive information, evidence, recordings, screenshots, or other material:

Take it to the police/law-enforcement authorities.

Share it with credible journalists/media outlets who can verify it responsibly.

Preserve the original evidence and avoid editing or publicly circulating it.

Do not post personal information on Reddit or other social media.

Do not threaten, harass, or encourage others to target anyone involved.

We can condemn alleged wrongdoing without abandoning basic principles of due process and privacy.

Be civilised. Do it legally. And, most importantly, be smart.

To improve the quality of advice shared in this subreddit, all users are now required to set a user flair indicating their batch/year.

We've seen many upcoming freshers answering questions about placements, academics, and cutoffs despite having little or no firsthand experience. While everyone is welcome to participate, please be mindful of the information you share.

For topics such as placements, internships, academics, and college cutoffs, we strongly recommend taking advice from senior students who have actually gone through the process.

Upcoming freshers are encouraged to ask questions, but please avoid presenting assumptions or hearsay as facts. Spreading misinformation only creates confusion for others.

Imagine having typhoid cases on campus and still thinking water subscriptions are a good idea (VIT Lions Edition)

VIT-AP management: “Students are struggling in this heat, distribute free ORS water in hostels.”

VIT Bhopal management: “What if hydration had a yearly subscription plan?”

Meanwhile students are already talking about jaundice/typhoid concerns and water quality complaints, but instead of fixing the basics first, the conversation somehow reached monetising drinking water itself. Truly a “VIT quality never ending policy 🎵” moment.
