Replacing the lower mirror cover on a MINI J01 — how do you get past the fold motor?

A few months ago a cyclist hit my car and broke both side mirror covers. I ordered new ones and took the door apart to remove the mirror.

The top cover was easy, but I’m stuck on the bottom cover — I can’t figure out how to disassemble the motor that folds the mirror to get it off. I suspect it needs a special tool.

I went to the MINI dealership and they told me they don’t do this repair — they only replace the entire mirror assembly, which seems incredibly wasteful. Online you can buy the bottom cover as a separate part, so it must be possible to swap it.

Has anyone done this? Any pointers appreciated.
