The ants are starving the flea larvae by taking away all their food (flea shit). Looks like they may be taking away the eggs too but haven't confirmed that yet.

Ants are annoying but the fleas are deadly. They terrorize, sicken and kill cats around here every year, and perpetuate tapeworms.

I've always been kind to the ants. One of the few times in my life that kindness was rewarded.
