A Lonely Thread - what picture?

Hi folks,

I’ve asked if I can run a Call of Cthulhu session at my local board game cafe. I’m going to run the one-shot ‘A Lonely Thread’.

The cafe has asked that I provide a description and a picture so that they can advertise it on their website and social media. The only problem is, the pictures relating to the scenario in the book ‘No Time to Scream’ contain spoilers (in my opinion). I’ve included examples of these in the post.

What could I use as an alternative image that is going to be intriguing enough to make players want to sign up? I think if I reveal the monster, it could ruin the surprise.

Post-Saturnine Chalice help

Before I begin, this post contains major spoilers for Saturnine Chalice and Dead Lights.

A while back I asked for some advice on running Saturnine Chalice as part of an ongoing series of narratively-linked one shots. My gaming group has played the same set of characters through these scenarios (in order):

  • The Haunting
  • A Lonely Thread
  • Bits & Pieces
  • Dead Lights
  • Saturnine Chalice

The latter went really well - my set up was that one of the characters, an antiquarian called Hollister, had heard of someone called ‘Weyland’ who lived out in the countryside and might be able to help them with the coffer containing the Dead Light, which the investigators had kept possession of. Saturnine Chalice ended with no one dying or being driven to insanity - and still no further with knowing what to do with this coffer.

I haven’t decided what to run for the next scenario. It’s getting to the point where I’m wondering whether it might be better to write my own, because it’ll remove the need to fit our expanding narrative into the confines of a ready-made one shot. However - I have never done this before, and I don’t want to write something poor that will disappoint my gaming group.

The only idea I have had so far is following up on Lester Goodman. I also read about the Arkham Coven in the Arkham book, and wondered if they could come into play - perhaps they want their beacon back and Nyarlathotep has sent them to get it?

Any advice is welcome.

Looking for advice on running Saturnine Chalice (and linking it into an ongoing series of one-shots)

Hi all,

I’m going to be running Saturnine Chalice soon and was hoping to get any tips from Keepers who have run it before. I’ve actually played through it once as an investigator with another group, so I know the broad outline of the scenario, but I’d really appreciate any advice on what worked well, what didn’t, or any pitfalls to avoid when running it.

Our group hasn’t really played a full campaign, but we’ve ended up creating one accidentally by using the same investigators through a series of one-shots. So far we’ve played (in the following order):

•	The Haunting
•	A Lonely Thread
•	Bits and Pieces
•	Dead Light

Somehow, against all odds, nobody has died. One investigator did end up permanently committed to an asylum after Bits and Pieces, but everyone else has survived so far.

One of the fun things we’ve been doing is taking it in turns to be Keeper. I was an investigator in Dead Light, so I made an Arkham police officer who had been following the group’s involvement in the other cases. During the finale, he convinced the rest of the group that Maria’s boyfriend should be offered to the Dead Light as a sacrifice so it would become satiated long enough for them to trap it in the coffer. The rest of the investigators were horrified… but they went along with it.

After the scenario I wrote a short epilogue where he resigned from the police, realising that if he was capable of making that decision, he probably wasn’t fit to wear the badge anymore. It felt like a good way to ‘retire’ the character now that I’m back behind the Keeper’s screen.

Our newest investigator is going to be the business partner of the character who went insane in Bits and Pieces. He’s making an antiquarian, which seems like a great fit for Saturnine Chalice.

What I’m struggling with is tying everything together naturally. I need: • a believable way for the antiquarian to become involved with the existing investigators (they already know the insane character), • a reason for the group to head off on another road trip together, and • ideally a way for the events of Dead Light to have some lingering consequences rather than feeling completely disconnected.

Has anyone linked Saturnine Chalice into an existing campaign before? I’d love to hear how you introduced it, or any ideas you think would work.
