RB Swan Lake casting predictions

After the trauma of last year when after I did the predictions too early, I deliberately held onto the Swan Lake casting predictions as late as possible, even after I felt pretty confident, in case something happens. And thank god I did, the addition of the second Manon run did impact my thought process a bit. I ended up not changing my predictions, but I rewrote bits of my analysis below.

Once again, this is what I predict the casting will be, not what I'll do if I'm in charge of casting.

This run has 32 shows. I’m guessing 12 pairs, assuming no one will double up. In no particular order:

  • Marianela Nuñez / Vadim Muntagirov
  • Natalia Osipova / *Patricio Revé
  • Francesca Hayward / Cesar Corrales
  • Akane Takada / Steven McRae
  • Yasmine Nagdhi / Matthew Ball
  • Fumi Kaneko / William Bracewell
  • Mayara Magri / Reece Clarke
  • Anna Rose O’Sullivan / Marcelino Sambé
  • Mariko Sasaki / *Calvin Richardson
  • Claire Calvert / Nicol Edmonds
  • *Melissa Hamilton / Ryoichi Hirano
  • *Marianna Tsembenhoi / Joseph Sissens

Lauren Cuthbertson said somewhere that she's done with O/O but later said never say never, but based on her rep in the last two seasons I think it's extremely unlikely. Sarah Lamb turns 46 this year and she's not dancing Nutcracker, so I don’t think she’s dancing O/O either. McRae wasn't cast in the 2024 run because he tore his ACL, but he danced in the 2022 run. Same as what I've said in previous predictions, if he thinks he can dance it, he'll be cast, whether he actually makes it on stage is a different question. Hirano will be 43, he isn't dancing Manon in the autumn but he is dancing Nutcracker and I don't know whether that's a sign, but I'm still expecting him to dance Siegfried. Calvert/Edmonds were given a single show in 2022. In 2024 they were supposed to dance two shows, but Calvert was injured and Edmonds was replaced as well. Neither of them will likely be promoted, so while I’m still predicting them, I won't be surprised if one or both of them are taken out of Swan Lake to make room for others.

I can see one or two O/O debuts. The last name I put on the predictions is Hamilton. She wasn’t cast in Giselle which doesn’t inspire confidence, but she danced the role during her stint in Dresden and covered the role at RB (which doesn’t mean much tbh). So IMO her chances are very slim. I decided to predict her anyway because I still think after Tsembenhoi she’s the next most likely candidate, and I feel like this is her last chance of getting cast in a classical role. It’s the other debut spot where having more Manon shows is impacting how I’m predicting. Before the announcement, I was convinced that the other debut slot would go to Tsembenhoi since she wasn’t cast in Manon or SPF, and after her successful Giselle debut, O/O could be the follow-up. Now I think she’ll debut either O/O or Manon but not both, and I decided to predict her here anyway because she is still the most obvious choice. There are a few other names that I also think may debut in either one of the ballets: Leticia Dias, Sae Maeda and Annette Buvoli. Viola Pantuso and Ella Newton Severgnini are dancing SPF, which I think will be their moment of the season, so I don’t think it’ll be them.

This will be Revé’s company debut but he’s danced the role elsewhere. Richardson isn’t cast in anything in the autumn, and all we know is that someone on BCF said “there is a reason,” So I'm just assuming he'll be back by then. With eleven male principals and another first soloist who danced the role, there’s no room for other Siegfried debuts but if anything happens (cough cough), I think Lukas Bjørneboe Brændsrød and Leo Dixon are the most likely candidates, though Luca Acri is a potential dark horse. Similar to the women, I think they may be given their opportunity in either Swan Lake or Manon, but there are fewer opportunities for the men.

When the season was announced I thought we were more likely to get a guest artist in Swan Lake than Manon, but we are indeed getting a guest artist in Manon, so IDK. All I’ll say is, if we are indeed getting a guest artist, I can't imagine it'll be someone who has never danced with any of the RB principals before. And purely based on gut instinct, I think we're more likely to get a woman than a man.

As I said in the Manon predictions, it’s harder to guess pairings this season, but I'm more confident here. I went with Nuñez/Muntagirov because they’re not paired together in the autumn Manon run and Nutcracker and I think if they don’t dance at least one full-length together this season, people will riot (I don’t think they’ll be paired together in the summer Manon run, they’ve never danced a MacMillan full-length together). The rest just fell into place. Went with Magri/Clarke because RB is trying to make this partnership happen with Nutcracker and Manon.

Cinema relay: RB’s preference for the cinema relay cast is principals only, with at least one run under their belt, and if possible, no repeats. Nuñez, Muntagirov, Bracewell, Nagdhi and Ball were filmed in this production. Osipova was filmed in the previous production. Takada was filmed for Japanese television. After this process of elimination, it leaves Hayward/Corrales, Magri/Clarke and O’Sullivan/Sambé, and within these three pairs I think Magri/Clarke is most likely. However, on the web page for Swan Lake, there are two photos of Kaneko. And at this point we should know publicity photos don’t mean much, and both of her frequent partners, Bracewell and Muntagirov (hey do you know he’s also her platonic friend?), were already filmed. However, RB does occasionally film a dancer in the same role more than once (or in the case of McRae's Mad Hatter, four times), so Fumi stans can still dream.

Thank you for reading and putting up with me. I'll have a post for the Heritage Classics triple and summer Manon run at some point.

RB 25/26 casting stats

I'm only counting regular season main stage performances. Spring Gala, School matinees and invited audience only performances count. Friends rehearsals, Linbury performances (e.g. A Single Man, Natalia Osipova's show, Pierrot Lunaire), the Singapore/Japan tour and Marianela Nuñez's summer programme do not count.

Last year I explained what are featured and supporting roles and what's original scheduled performance, but basically featured roles are those where casting are announced in advanced and available on the website (e.g. Giselle, Clara, most dancers in Alchemies), and supporting roles are those listed on the cast sheet, note RB often doesn't credit the corps on the cast sheets so they're not counted here. For Woolf Works, all featured appearances are counted as one role, to account for the overrepresentation of McGregor this season. Casting for Salle de Danse was not announced in advance, so all performances are supporting. My definition of a debut is the first time a dancer performs a role with RB, e.g., Anna Rose O'Sullivan had danced Giselle elsewhere, but it's still considered a debut. Sometimes the cast sheets are wrong but I've tried my best.

Dancers are ranked by the number of featured roles, followed by featured performances, supporting roles and supporting performances.

Perhaps unexpectedly, the top two women are first soloists, Leticia Dias and Sae Maeda. Dias had more featured roles but Maeda had more featured performances. Marianela Nuñez is the top principal woman.

Charlotte Tonkinson had the most supporting performances (86) and overall number of performances (100). Tonkinson, Mica Bradbury and Julia Roscoe had the most supporting roles (14). Tonkinson, Dias and Bradbury had the most roles overall (14).

For men, Matthew Ball unsurprisingly took the lead. A bit more surprisingly, Luca Acri is second.

I must highlight Denilson Almeida as well, he had the most supporting roles (21), overall number of roles (22), supporting performances (91) and overall number of performances (96).

RB Manon casting prediction

Unfortunately, I have to do this before the promotions, joiners and leavers announcement, so I’m basing my predictions on the current roster. This is an objective prediction, I’m guessing the most likely casting scenario, not what I’ll do if I’m in charge, the purpose is to have fun and manage expectations. Honestly, I’m not confident with this, there are multiple versions and what you’re seeing is what I believed in when I clicked post, maybe tomorrow I’ll change my mind. I'm ready to be extremely wrong when casting comes out.

The last run was 17 shows with nine pairs of Manon/Des Grieux (one cast had one show, the rest had two). This time there will be 22 shows, so I’m expecting 11 pairs. As of time of writing, there are 10 full-time female principals and 11 male.

In no particular order, Manon and Des Grieux:

  • Marianela Nuñez / Patricio Revé
  • Natalia Osipova / Reece Clarke
  • Sarah Lamb / Steven McRae
  • Francesca Hayward / *Cesar Corrales
  • Akane Takada / *Joseph Sissens
  • Yasmine Nagdhi / Matthew Ball
  • Fumi Kaneko / Vadim Muntagirov
  • Melissa Hamilton / Ryoichi Hirano
  • *Mayara Magri / Calvin Richardson
  • *Anna Rose O’Sullivan / Marcelino Sambé
  • Lauren Cuthbertson / William Bracewell

For the titular role, Nagdhi has already confirmed she’ll be back by then. The longer run means there is room for debuts. Magri and O’Sullivan, who were the two most junior female principals in the 23/24 season, were not cast as Manon in the last run. Both danced the Bedroom PDD at the Jacob’s Pillow in 2024, and they’re almost guaranteed to be debuting this time. As you can see above, I predicted Cuthbertson for the eleventh spot. The last run was between the birth of her second child and becoming principal guest. She didn’t dance the last two MacMillan full-lengths, and she appears to be more interested in new roles. However, Manon seems more suited to her at this point than Juliet and Mary Vetsera, and she'll dance the Bedroom PDD at RB’s tour to Singapore, which doesn't exactly mean she's dancing the full-length but I'm taking it as a sign. Two other leading candidates for that slot (and in earlier versions I predicted them) are Mariko Sasaki and Marianna Tsembenhoi. Sasaki seems to be next in line for principal promotion, having already debuted O/O and Giselle but yet to take on a major MacMillan or Ashton role. Tsembenhoi just had an acclaimed Giselle debut and Manon can be a good follow-up, plus she’s just announced to be dancing a long-lost MacMillan PDD at the Spring Gala which shows the powers that be’s confidence in her dancing MacMillan. Long-shot candidates I thought of are Leticia Dias, Sae Maeda, Annette Buvoli, Viola Pantuso and Ella Newton Severgnini.

We don’t know the extent of McRae’s current injury, but I’m assuming if there’s a slim chance he can make it on stage in time, he’ll try (and we know he’s dancing at the Linbury in September). Revé had already danced Des Grieux with Queensland Ballet, and I doubt RB will cast someone else over him. Two male principals have not danced the role, Sissens and Corrales, the latter was injured during the 23/24 season. They’ll likely debut.  Roberto Bolle guested in the last run, but it’s very unlikely that he’ll return because 1) even though he still looks like a Greek god, he’s 51 and 2) there’s just no room. Barring any personnel changes or injuries, I do not see any non-principal Des Grieux. If any of the principals isn’t dancing, I think the most obvious candidates are Lukas B. Brændsrød (I probably would’ve predicted him if Revé isn't joining RB) and Leo Dixon.

If I’m wrong about Cuthbertson, I’m probably extremely wrong about the pairings as well. It’s a lot more complicated than previous years for one reason, Patricio Revé, who’s joining the company as a preferred partner of both  Osipova and Nuñez (sooner or later RB has to try him with someone else). From a casting predictions perspective, he has disrupted equilibrium - often when I have to make one change, it causes a domino effect and I end up making multiple changes. His hiring impacts the casting for six other dancers: Nuñez, Osipova, Muntagirov, Clarke, Kaneko and Bracewell, with an odd man out. Since I’m predicting Cuthbertson will dance, I went with her and Bracewell, platonic friends Kaneko and Muntagirov, then I went with Nuñez/Revé and Osipova/Clarke, but they can easily go the other way. The latter pair danced almost everything together for several years but not much recently. Per this interview Osipova did in April 2025 (days after she first met Revé btw), “they’ve (Osipova and Clarke) had such good times on the stage but after five years of dancing together it’s good to give him space to be with different partners and maybe next year they’ll be together again”. Welp a year later she’s dancing most things with Revé but at least the Clarke partnership isn’t over.

Cinema relay: usually the cast for the cinema relay is someone who had danced the role prior and never been filmed. Nuñez, Muntagirov, Lamb, Osipova and Clarke have been filmed. I think it will be either Hayward or Hamilton, both debuted the role back in 2014 and both considered the finest MacMillan interpreters. The photo the ROH’s is using on the website is Hayward and Sambé, but that’s not really a sign that they’ll dance the relay (for Fille they used O’Sullivan’s photo but Hayward danced the relay).

I’ve decided not to do full on predictions for Lescaut and Mistress, instead just list some possibilities.

Lescaut: Hirano only got to debut Des Grieux in 2024 following McRae’s ACL injury, and he strikes me as someone who enjoys Lescaut more than Des Grieux, so there's a good chance that he'll dance both roles. However, I don’t think Sissens will reprise this role. James Hay, Luca Acri and Valentino Zucchetti danced the last run so I expect them to be back. Possibilities for debut: Lukas B Brændsrød, Leo Dixon, Joonhyuk Jun, Harris Bell, Liam Boswell, Téo Dubreuil, Daichi Ikarashi, Joshua Junker, Taisuke Nakao, Francisco Serrano, Marco Masciari.

Mistress: Magri and O’Sullivan were Mistresses in the last run, but with their almost guaranteed Manon debuts, I don’t think they’re reprising this role. Claire Calvert, Yuhui Choe, Meaghan Grace Hinkis and Leticia Dias had previously danced this role. Debut candidates: Annette Buvoli, Sae Maeda, Mariko Sasaki, Mica Bradbury, Hannah Grennell, Chisato Katsura, Viola Pantuso, Julia Roscoe, Amelia Townsend, Charlotte Tonkinson, Marianna Tsembenhoi.

The advanced casting usually includes Monsieur G.M.. The role was performed by principal character artists in the last run, but this time there are five more shows and one fewer character artist, so I won't be surprised if there's a debut.

Thank you all for reading and putting up with me, let me know how wrong I am below.
