Let's Hear from Visitors: Expectation vs. Reality?

Curious to hear what your experiences were during your recent visit to NYC. What was your expectation vs. reality? Love to hear your stories. Also think it's helpful for others planning their [first] visit.

Some examples:

  • What NYC stereotype turned out to be completely false?
  • What NYC attraction disappointed you despite the hype?
  • What were your concerns? Did they play out or not?

Thanks for sharing.

Thank You for Your Service (and Your Spam Reports)

On behalf of the mod team, a big NYC-style attaboy to our frequent contributors and everyone who helps keep this sub just a little less chaotic than Penn Station on a Friday afternoon.

We see you out there in the threads, patiently answering the same questions over and over, reporting spam, promoting the sub in other communities, and warning people not to bring their vague-ass questions over here. It’s genuinely appreciated and makes our “job” a whole lot easier.

A special thank-you as well to those of you helping out in the accommodations thread. That’s been a huge help, and we really appreciate the effort. Kudos to you all.

If anyone is interested in becoming a mod, or writing a mega thread please reach out.

Since we use the delete feature pretty liberally (over 400 items removed in the last 30 days) you might not have seen some of these. Sometimes they make me laugh simply because of how oddly specific the asks are… or how spectacularly vague they can be. Hand to god, these are all actual posts.

>I’m not looking for the typical tourist traps i can find those on google maps i need the real spots where the local creators and editors hang out where can i find the best coffee in a quiet corner or a street that has that perfect moody vibe for some shots i’m a sucker for clean aesthetics and high contrast views so if you know any hidden gems or underrated rooftops

>Hi, I’m visiting New York in June, and have 5 days to kill. What should I be doing considering it is a solo trip?

>What else to do after the statue of liberty

>Does anyone know how to book an 8-person dinner reservation at a restaurant? It's so hard!! Nobody supports such a large group here in NYC!

Happy Mothers Day to all that celebrate and here's hoping Knicks fan have something to celebrate tomorrow!

Peak tourist season is right around the corner, and NYC is about to get seriously busy. With major events like the soccer tournaments and Sail4th 250 on top of the usual summer crowds, we’re expecting bigger-than-normal turnout this year.

Drop your best tips for surviving a NYC summer. Whether it’s how to stay cool, avoid crowds, handle long lines, or just enjoy the city without losing your mind, your advice can make a big difference.

If you’re visiting or new here, please check out our existing threads first. We’ve compiled some of the most useful and informative ones to answer common questions. Take a look before posting, since there’s a good chance your question has already been covered (more than once). Make sure to read the comments, not just the post.

We're always happy to share updated tips from locals and frequent visitors so keep them coming.

My #1 tip, especially if it’s your first time in NYC, is to give yourself plenty of time to get around and always build in extra buffer for waiting. Trust there will be lines. And just because you have a timed ticket doesn’t mean you’ll get in right at that time.

Here’s a roundup of some cool events and things to do in NYC this summer. This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list, so feel free to explore and find even more on your own. For more ideas, check out NYC Tourism.

Note: This list does not include July 4th events (separate post TK). For FIFA World Cup–related activities, please refer to the dedicated thread.

See websites for exact times, locations and costs.  While many events are free, they still may require advance booking/tickets.
