My first go at section B - I would appreciate some constructive criticism!

As this was my first go, I mainly focused on getting my ideas on the document and not so much on redundancy/clarity of argument...Please let me know any feedback and how to improve!!

“Women now have the chance to do anything they want” How would you respond to this qs?

Intro

A woman sits in an air-conditioned office, and is the first in her bloodline to have the “chance” to work after her formal education has been completed. However, despite having access to such a chance, she is still discriminated against based on her gender and is salaried significantly less than her male colleagues. While women may have more formal opportunities in the social, economic and public sphere, such as voting and entering the workforce more freely, the phrase “anything they want” serves as a gross overstatement, as women still suffer from sexism, gender-based violence and pay-gaps. Moreover, the term “chance” in this prompt could suggest that women were either previously barred from exercising their full autonomy, or had to gain the permission of some authority to gain such freedom. Overall this prompt fails to consider the intersection of factors such as race, class and immigration status that may restrict a woman from doing “anything” she wants, assuming that women solely exist within a liberal Western monolith, wherein even so women continue to face barriers that undermine their rights and freedom, significantly.

BP1

While women may have legal or procedural equality with their male peers in front of the law, the extent to which this manifests as substantive chance, with addition to the intersection of factors such as gender, class and immigration status, raises crucial debate. For instance, both a man and a woman may be from a similar disadvantaged background as a woman, such as having a vulnerable immigration status, and originating from a working-class and minority ethnicity background. However, the woman in this case will face an extra layer of discrimination that the man will likely not, due to her gender. An intersectional wage disparity study published by Macalester College found that while immigrant status and race carry their own independent wage penalties, non-citizen women face an additional 7.9% wage penalty due strictly to the compounding effect of gender bias. Similarly, the prompt compartmentalises women in such that their experiences are all contained within a single monolith. However, substantially, the real “chance” for a woman to do “anything she wants” crucially lies in where a woman identifies herself across the scale of intersectionality. Even if this prompt may agree with one country’s legal system, the circumstances deteriorate once you leave a particularly Western context.

BP2

Building on the prompt's singularity, the prompt also assumes an entirely liberal, Western context, as if this prompt was to be applied in nations such as Afghanistan, where the radical, Islamist regime of the Taliban has barred secondary education for women, the scenario would fail to produce a response rooted in reality. Women in the Global South are often restricted by even hypothesising a “chance” for freedom, such as in countries like Pakistan, where 1,000 honour killings take place each year, primarily in response to a woman choosing to do “anything she wants”, such as marrying by choice or pursuing an education. However, some individuals may still argue that such regimes are an example of “cherry-picking”, and that progress is occurring in places around the world. It should be acknowledged that such perspective does represent a partial truth, as in countries like South Africa, gender-based violence has officially been recognised as a ‘national emergency.’ However, what this prompt fails to concede is that the absence of violence against women and their right to autonomy does not exist in any nation. A UN statistic shared that “no country is free of femicide” and that “every 12 minutes a woman is killed by an intimate partner of a family member”. The prompt’s inclusion of “now” treats uneven struggle as an accomplished fact, when women still continue to struggle in “doing anything they want” or exercising their autonomy, albeit from fundamentalist governments, patriarchal cultures or the prevalence of violence against women around the world itself.

BP3

Lastly, to fully determine the extent to which a woman may have the “chance” to do “anything she wants", internal, sociological barriers must be examined, beyond just the legal sphere. To illustrate, a hypothetical scenario can be abstracted, where if a girl is never encouraged towards a path to full freedom of choice and movement, and is socially redirected to traditional gender norms such as homemaking and childbearing, the want for such “chance” never fully concretises into being exercised in the future. The prompt phrasing of “anything they want” simply assumes that wanting is neutral and unconditioned, however, wanting is shaped by the same unequal environment as opportunity itself. Ideologies such as choice feminism or patriarchal bargaining encourage women to mould themselves inside systems which have been created to perpetuate a certain, traditional ideal, and therefore some women never even fully philosophise the idea of “doing anything they want”, as their future has already been societal determined for them. Therefore, the prospect of having “chance” alone does not fully summarise the contexts in which women exist today, because even if women do practically have access to a “chance”, they may not “choose” to exercise it in order to satisfy societal gender norms.

Conclusion

Ultimately, while it can be acknowledged that formal opportunity for women has significantly expanded, the prompt’s phrase of “anything they want” is a major overstatement (edited) . Factors such as intersectionality and the disadvantages that follow, ignorance of women in the Global South and the self-limitation of ‘want’ itself compound together to show how this “chance” faces a myriad of obstacles.

Want to make a law blog for my PS - where do I start?

Hey there!! So, as part of expanding my extracurriculars, I want to start a law blog with 3-5 articles in which I critically engage with specific aspects of the law. Specifically, criminal law and cases regarding honour killings in the UK (Banaz Mahmod, Shafelia Ahmed, etc.) and writing about the intersection of criminal law with such cases. I'm not sure where to start. What is important to discuss? What will show unis I'm aiming for (LSE, KCL, UCL, QMUL) that I can critically interact with aspects of the law and apply it to different scenarios? Do I look at case law? What aspects do I write about and how? Where can I find resources to help me in this process? I would greatly appreciate some guidance on this matter. Thank you!!

Switched from HL LangLit to HL Lit at the end of DP1 - will I be able to catch up?

Hey!! So I decided to switch from HL langlit to HL lit at the end of DP1, after my end-of-year exams, I sort of realised that I couldn't analyse dry, visual texts with as much depth as I could literary texts that are typically birthed from feelings and emotions, thus framing a more intentional, personal interpretation that I could then write about in my essay. This is particularly concerning P1. However, before my end of year exams I had created a large drive for HL langlit with a bunch of resources, past papers, practise papers, exemplars etc, and now I feel like i'll have to rummage for Lit resources all over again. Anywho, I'm mostly scared that the structure by which you analyse langlit texts in P1 is vastly different in lit. If it is, how so? What can I do in the summer to prepare and get the structure right? Is anyone offering tutoring for HL Lit? I think I have the literary works covered, and i have only 2 works that I need to catch up on over the summer. The 5 works for DP1 is Born a Crime, Their Eyes Were Watching God , Carol Ann Duffy poems (these I studied in langlit and will be taking to lit), and THEN I have to catch up by reading Barefoot Gen + Street Car Named Desire OR Nickel Boys (still havent chosen). I know next year we're doing Hedda Gabbler, and Claire Keegan (Small Things Like These + Forlong), not sure about the rest of the texts. If anyone has notes or resources on these, please let me know!! My main question is where can I learn the best structure for Lit P1, how can i alter/improve my writing style from langlit-ish to lit (if I have to) and what should I be looking for in P1s when annotating as well as the texts that i'll study (themes, etc.). Thank you!!!

Global Politics EE - people who got A!

Hi!! I just wanted to make this post to see if anyone could give some advice/ help me in terms of structure, regarding my global politics EE! I'm M27 and just starting, so I won't need comprehensive advice obviously, but things people did that they think made them achieve an A. I'm doing it in a topic I'm extremely passionate about, but I'm scared that as I'm writing my outline, it won't be A material. Thank you!!

I literally do not know how to memorise all of this and its making me sort of spiral. I have mocks in 2 weeks and I dont know what to do or how to study for ESS. I would love any sort of advice.

LLB 2027 entry; how to boost application?

Hey there! I'm an international British Pakistani student who will (hopefully) be applying to UCL for the LLB. I'm unsure what else I can do to boost my application, besides maintaining strong grades and a good LNAT score.

I have an avid interest in human rights and justice, specifically honour-based abuse within the Pakistani diaspora in the UK. I'm extremely passionate about this topic, so I hope it serves as a strong theme or motivation for applying to UCL. Here are some extra/supplementary activities I have completed or will be doing in the summer. Please let me know what I can add or do for the coming summer!!

  • Admitted into the Athena Scholars Programme in the UK (not that impressive, as it's just a generic Oxford exchange summer school, but I wrote about the commission of honour-based violence in Pakistan, specifically in rural areas, issues with legal implementation, and plausible solutions.
  • President of the Law Society.
  • Grade representative during G11 and G12.
  • World Events section head for school newspaper.
  • Gave a gender equality talk to grade 5 students (had some experience with sexism, overcame it and pushed for policy reforms within the school to promote gender equality in the classroom).
  • Bennignton Essay participation.
  • I will start a legal blog covering cases surrounding honour killings within the UK and the criminal justice perspectives.
  • I am doing the IB, and my Global Politics EE is on the extent to which British criminal law has protected the human rights of Pakistani immigrant women from honour-based abuse.
  • I will be volunteering at charities in my home country, Pakistan, including NGOs focused on women's rights and women's shelters.
  • Will be interning at a law firm in Abu Dhabi (likely commercial law).
  • Many UK unis like when students engage with academic material related to the degree (books, online courses, etc.) - many of which I have done.
  • Heavily involved in MUN (won best delegate a couple of times).

These are all the ones I can get from the top of my head, but please let me know what else I can do to boost my application!! Thank you!!

LLB 2027 entry; how to improve overall application?

Hey there! I'm an international British Pakistani student who will (hopefully) be applying to LSE for the LLB and/or Law and Anthropology. I'm unsure of what I can do further to boost my application, besides maintaining strong grades and a good LNAT score.

Hey there! I'm a student who will (hopefully) be applying to NYUAD for their BA in law. It's the only American uni I'm applying to that's here in Abu Dhabi, so I'm a bit unsure about what admissions officers may be looking for.

Hey there! I'm currently a Y12 student and will (hopefully) be applying to KCL for 2027 entry for the LLB. For context, I'm attaching a previous post for important context: https://www.reddit.com/r/UniUK/comments/1smtjk4/how_to_fund_uni_costs_as_a_british_international/

I've read through some research, as well as the general form unis provide to fill in for a request to switch from international status to a home status. I mainly want to switch to home status so I can be eligible for SFE. The ties that I have back home, as per the form and in general, are:

  • Maternal uncle who lives in one of our homes in the UK
  • Two other flats besides the house in which my uncle lives
  • Uncle is a British citizen and is employed
  • Council tax is regularly paid for, and so is the mortgage
  • Rent goes into a UK bank account
  • Visited the UK once in 2023 (I know this is probably insufficient).
  • No general restriction in the current country of residence (UAE); we moved for economic/financial purposes.
  • Was born in the UK, moved 6 years ago.

These are all I can think of for now. If there's anything else that may help my situation, and it's something I can acquire according to my context, please let me know! Overall, I'm hoping for responses from people with experience in this field, and the sort of nuanced side of me, not having direct parental support due to cultural issues. If anyone is aware of other London unis more likely to grant international status to home, please let me know. Additionally, if there's someone who deals with fees and funding at KCL on this subreddit, please also reach out! Thank you so much.
