Before and Aftercare

Hello!

I wanted to create (another!) Community post about Childcare challenges in KW right now. I've been trying to advocate for improved access to before and aftercare, with both the aftercare program as well as the superintendent, and it's at the point where I'm wondering if a more systematic and focused approach would be helpful.

I fully understand funding challenges, staffing challenges, and that there is so much complexity, but what it comes down to is children and parents having to navigate frankly unnecessary challenges. I wanted to share the email I sent to the superintendent of our school, and encourage others to share similar. And to be clear: Yes, we should pay ECE's more. Yes we should better fund schools. I know there are similar challenges with Daycare spots regionally. It's really tough out there.

I am writing as a parent to share concerns about equity in access to elementary aftercare programs.

I want to acknowledge that I know this challenge is not the result of any single decision or individual, but rather a broader, systemic capacity issue. That said, the current outcomes raise direct equity concerns. Access to aftercare is not simply a convenience, it is a critical support that enables parents to remain employed and financially stable.

As a working parent, the absence of guaranteed aftercare creates substantial challenges in meeting employment responsibilities. At a high level, these impacts are not evenly distributed and I acknowledge it's extra complex in a time where some families have more flexibility for WFH and others do not. Working parents, most often mothers, are disproportionately affected when aftercare is unavailable, reinforcing gendered inequities in the workforce. Personally my husband works in Guelph, with no WFH, and my position at *confidential* offers some flexibility but not enough to fully cover aftercare. We have looked extensively for alternatives, and so far haven't had any luck.

I share these concerns in the spirit of collaboration, open communication, and with appreciation for the complexity of the issue. I hope they can contribute to ongoing conversations about how aftercare policies and capacity planning might better reflect equity goals, especially for our youngest students and working families.

Thank you for your time and for your continued leadership in supporting students and families, and I hope you can give some advice or support in this.

Thank you for your time and attention.
