What is the likelihood a stray dog I knew joined coyotes?

So, I was trying to catch a stray dog for like about a month, this dog was absolutely terrified of people. He's a medium sized German shepherd looking dog, slightly smaller than a normal German shepherd, who was black and white instead of black and brown, medium length fur. He had disappeared one day and didn't come back for weeks, so much so we assumed he had either been rescued finally, or he was dead because of all the crossing roads he did on a street known for drunk drivers because people go and drink at the small airport bar down the road and then drive home, thinking they won't get in trouble for it. I digress.

Last night, after howling that sounded not dog-like at all, more like yipping we used to hear during baby season for coyotes mixed with howling, he appears. Way past dark, when he was usually found sleeping with 2 outside dogs. When I went to get him food, assuming he was here for food and water, he refused to take any. He was still just as scared of me, and just as social with my dogs through the fence, no fighting or barking.

I wake up to this text from my mom at 3 am. We live across the road from empty wilderness and farmland with TONS of wildlife both in our yards and in that wilderness, Google says it's possible, but not really. I'm asking you guys cuz idk who else to ask really?? Last photo is Ludo, the stray dog
