Accreditation
I have a question about ACGME accreditation and resident graduation.
I’m considering joining a residency program that currently has Initial Accreditation. My understanding is that its initial accreditation period is expected to end around the time my class graduates, and the program will undergo another ACGME review.
Because of the J-1 visa process, I may have to start 1–2 months late, which would likely mean I need a 1–2 month extension at the end of residency to complete all my required training.
My questions are:
If the program receives unfavorable accreditation decisions during that review (for example, significant citations leading to probation or even loss of accreditation), what would happen to a resident in my situation who only needs an extra 1–2 months to graduate?
Would I still be allowed to finish training there?
Would I have to transfer to another ACGME-accredited program for those remaining months?
Has anyone experienced something similar or knows how the ACGME/ABIM typically handles this?
I’m trying to understand the risk before making a decision. Thanks!
