GRE and its impact.

When it's explicitly stated as optional in admission requirements, do committees prefer candidates with GRE over non-GRE candidates? Considering that other aspects of the profile are similar (or almost similar). Apologies if its generic/repeated question, but I have not been able to fully understand its Impact on PhD applications.

What exactly are benefits/plus-points of having correspondence with PIs prior to application cycles (and submissions)

Hello good people.

The title is the main query. I am confused between these two options for approaching upcoming (spring/fall 27) cycles, looking to find some guidance on this matter. Thanks

Looking for tips/guides to summarize thesis (kind of like 3MT but not exactly)

Hello good people.

I have an interview for a phd position. PI has asked me to prepare slides to introduce myself and explain master thesis and my research interest in 2 min tops.

I have never participated in 3MT type competetion, so I was wondering what to include and miss here. I have stuttering issue as well, not always but tend to present under some situation

Thank you for reading

Same research direction but in different application

Hi, i am hoping this reaches profs or senior-level grad students here.

I wanted to ask if its a good idea to reach out a professor (in CS/AI) for potential fit and/or phd supervision, if their research direction/statement is what I would like to pursue but they havenot pursued (themselves or via any other of their current student) it for the application I am intrested in ?

For example, I have shortlisted a prof/lab, their main area of work is causal discovery and ML but most of their work is done earth/atmoshpere related whereas I am intresred in pursuin the same direction but for healthcare/medical ai. Thanks.

The letter will be addressed to the Admissions Team / Committee **

Edit: I already have had 2 Zooms with this potential PI, and we did find a common research direction in one of the zoom, he did raise a similar question: " Why are you interested in my group?" and I am thinking of writing the same response as what I gave to him in the meeting
