HOT TAKE: Dirt Rally 2.0 physics are basically the same as Forza Horizon
I started playing racing games not too long ago and learned them completely from the ground up - first in FH5, then in Forza Motorsport, and later in FH6. At this point I’ve spent many, many hours in the Forza franchise and reached a moderately high skill level, so I’m very familiar with all the little intricacies of how these games handle physics.
Ever since I got into racing games, all I kept hearing was elitist talk about how Forza Horizon is "just an arcade game" or, at best, "simcade". Meanwhile, I could never shake the impression that the physics in these games actually feel surprisingly realistic.
Recently I got access to both Dirt Rally 2.0 and EA Sports WRC through Xbox Game Pass. Since I’ve grown a bit bored of Forza and always loved the rally side of things, I happily switched over in search of a deeper rally experience.
What I discovered surprised me: I could pick up these games instantly and drive without any issues, because they literally feel the same as Forza. Of course, there are differences that make DR2.0 and WRC more difficult, but none of those differences come from the physics. Around 90% of the difficulty comes from the maps themselves - narrow roads, uneven surfaces, cliffs or trees on both sides that punish every mistake, and the lack of a racing line that would guide you on your perfect run. Aside from that, it’s the same kind of simulation. Everything you can do in one game, you can do in the other; everything you need to watch out for in one, you need to watch out for in the other.
Sure, I’ve heard people call Dirt Rally a simcade as well, but I’ve also heard claims that it (or WRC) is the best rally sim ever made. Based on what people were saying, I never would’ve expected these games to feel so comparable to Forza.
So, what do you think? Can you agree?
