[Question] Is there ANY way to run Windows Media Player 10 on an M1 Mac via Wine/Porting Kit? (Trying to use .wmz skins)

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to bring back some Y2K aesthetics by using a specific .wmz skin, but I'm hitting a massive wall on my M1 MacBook Air.

I know I can just use a full VM like Parallels or VMware to run Windows 11 ARM, but I really want to run WMP lightweight via Porting Kit / Wineskin, just like I successfully did with Winamp. However, WMP seems to be a completely different beast.

Here is what I’ve tried so far in Porting Kit:

  1. Winetricks: Created a new custom port and used Winetricks to install wmp10.
    • Result: Silent crash. The executable (wmplayer.exe) just won't launch. No error logs pop up; it just dies in the background.
  2. Direct .exe Installation: Created a clean wrapper (blank port), downloaded the WMP 10 offline installer, and tried to run the setup manually.
    • Result: Got an error saying, "This version of Windows Media Player can be installed only on computers running Windows XP (32-bit)."
  3. Winecfg Tweak: Went into winecfg and changed the Windows version to Windows XP to bypass the setup check.
    • Result: Still got the exact same 32-bit error. I'm assuming this is because the Wineskin engine running on Apple Silicon is inherently 64-bit, and WMP 10 strictly demands a 32-bit environment.

Has any Wine/CrossOver wizard here successfully ported Windows Media Player to Apple Silicon? Or is it fundamentally impossible because WMP is too deeply tied to core Windows registries and legacy IE components?

Any workarounds or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance 👍

Need Help: Winamp 5.6 on Apple Silicon (M1) via Wine - Modern Skin & Vis Plugins (MilkDrop/AVS) freezing/crashing

Hi everyone, I’m trying to set up Winamp 5.666 on my M1 Mac using Porting Kit (Wine wrapper), specifically to use complex Modern Skins (like headAMP) that feature built-in visualization windows.

I’ve managed to get the basic playback working by setting the Wine configuration to Windows XP and disabling ReplayGain / Auto-Tagger to stop ucrtbase.dll access violation crashes.

However, I am completely stuck on getting the visualizations to work inside the Modern Skins:

1. MilkDrop (v2.25c) Shader Error: When MilkDrop tries to load within the skin, I get the following popup error:

>

2. AVS (Advanced Visualization Studio) Freezing: As a fallback, I tried switching to AVS. However, the moment I activate AVS and play a track, the entire Winamp application completely freezes and forces me to force-quit the Wine process.

My Current Setup:

  • Hardware: M1 MacBook Air (Apple Silicon)
  • Wrapper: Porting Kit (Wine), set to Windows XP mode
  • Settings Tweak: Disabled "Desktop Alpha Blending" in Modern Skin settings. Disabled all background scanning and ML plugins.

My Questions:

  1. Is there a specific winetricks package, DirectX override (like DXVK), or dll I need to install into the Wine wrapper so MilkDrop's ps_2_0 shaders can compile correctly on Apple Silicon?
  2. Why would AVS completely freeze the Wine wrapper, and is there a fix for it?
  3. Are there any known workarounds to get heavily scripted Modern Skins (.wal) to stop trying to analyze tracks upon drag-and-drop?

Any insights from Wine gurus or Winamp skin veterans would be massively appreciated!
