Unusual end of term.

This one day last month, in the final week of the semester:

  1. A student vehemently argued with me about their attendance record. I had receipts.
  2. Another graduating student left for me a very sweet parting gift as a thank you.
  3. A former student from fifteen years ago reached out of nowhere to say hello and catch me up on their current career path (which was in line with what they studied all those years ago). They said they still hear my voice in their head when they produce work.
  4. And another student, surprised that I kept attendance, suddenly panicked. I'm curious if they recall their dismissive, often rude behavior earlier this semester.

It was such a long, stressful, sweet, stressful, odd day.

“But we were in class.”

I am annoyed^(1) with little angry mobs of students who complain about grades (especially when they are all currently getting good grades), attendance and participation.

If you don't want to be here, don’t be here. You are an adult. </rant>

^(1) Annoyed-entertained, they're probably interchangeable.

Student evals

Just completed reading evals. I always cringe at the thought of reading these. Fortunately, the last couple years, they have not been too bad; but those 1-2 angry comments always stick around in my head.

I'm sure I'll wake up in the middle of the night thinking to myself ‘That ONE student really did not like my class.’

Fcck. Someone beer me.

Shit behavior

I’ve walked into a classroom and seen my likeness drawn in effigy. Students suck sometimes.

Today, I walked into a classroom and I saw a message drawn on the white board disparaging another student. This crossed a threshold for me. I am beyond disappointed in students’ behavior. Unfortunately, I do not know who wrote the message.

Can I leave early?

A student e-mailed me and asked: Your class ends at 1:50p next Fall. My ____ class starts at 2p. Can I leave your class early?

I'm tempted to tell him to ask his 2p instructor if he can just arrive late every day.

Questions for graphic designers with Associates degrees in Graphic Design

Hey, all.

I am curious to hear from practicing graphic designers who have both an Associates and Baccalaureate degree in graphic design.

  1. Did the 4-year degree open up doors that the Associates did not? For that matter, did you find the 2-year degree was sufficient by itself?
  2. How much more ‘design’ did you learn with with the 4-year under your belt than just the 2-year?

Doctors’ notes

I allow students to provide doctors’ notes should they miss class. Sounds draconian, I know, but I have a fairly strict attendance policy.

I have one student who has so obviously faked these notes last year (I just gave them the benefit of doubt and went about the term). This year, same student, I'm tempted to call the numbers on the note provided.

Anyway. End of the term shenanigans.

Just tired, Profs.

Tired of drawing the seething ire from certain students for no reason. Trying not to be bothered, but sometimes it wears on me.

I’ll delete this post at the end of the day. Just wanted to vent-rant.

Learn to code. Learn to code, so you can put up a site on GitHub FOR FREE; so your site doesn't look like everyone else’s site, so you can have ChatGPT or Claude produce the code, but you can adjust as necessary, so you aren't limiting yourself to a narrow spectrum of practice. </rant>

I have a question for the hive-mind, specifically for directors out there who hire new designers or interns.

Aside from the work you see presented , what are your thoughts about the recent crop of new graduates in terms of their professionalism, eagerness, attitude, entitlement?

Do you have any recommendations or suggestions about applicants and their professionalism.

I'm just curious if the mindset for new designers was different in the 90s, early 00s than they are now. Maybe they're better.
