Swim spas in 2026: big decision, big footprint, and (usually) big price tag; or what to consider when buying a swim spa in 2026

This is my third guide in backyard tubs, this one all about swim spas. I wanted to address some common misconceptions and where buying tends to go off the rails. Because despite apparent similarity, swim spas are different beasts than hot tubs. They are bigger, heavier, hungrier for power, and what matters most is novel to the build - the current you swim against. Install is still important but that current and how you use it determines longevity.

First considerations: do you need a swim spa? Because if you want to relax and maybe swim every now and then, a smaller unity or a large hot tub may suit your needs better. Or if you want a swim and a soak, dual zone units can hold a swim area and hot tub area at independent temps. Triple zone adds a cold plunge. But focus on what you will use it for most days. Most wallets cannot accommodate swim spa that becomes a really long hot tub just because you wanted the option (but if that isn't a barrier, by all means).

Money and money and also money: entry models trend 12k-20k USD with smaller shells, single current, and base features. Middle range is 20k-30k which gets large shell, more control on the current, and dual temps. High end runs 30k-40k+ with massive footprints, triple temp ranges, strongest propulsion, and highly adjustable currents. But as will all things, value plateaus at the top and sales start talking showy features rather than core build. Don't spring for more jets or pay for celebrity branding. When in doubt, observe pricing for drops and discounts. Waiting a month could real save a lot or even let you move up a tier if desired.

Current above all: jet or river-jet systems can range from choppy to silky flows. Turbine systems move wider and smoother walls of water and are usually easier to swim against. Propeller models move the most and tend to have the smoothest flow which is reflected in cost. And for good reason. Bubbles are hard to swim against. Width and depth of flow affects your stroke and top speed. Strong currents might still swim poorly so look up videos and testimonies if possible.

Foundation and electrics: Shells mostly run from 12-20ft with some even larger which doubly matters for tall folks and long strokes. Most builds run on 240V with 50 or 60amps. Dual temp can need two circuits so check your panel can handle it. Weight starts being a massive consideration when a filled spa with swimmers can be 10k pounds or more. So you need a (very) flat, well engineered base. Usually a reenforced concrete pad. Which can move costs. Ask for specs on the pad and weight and get it in writing.

Temp and water care: Do you need a single temp for the whole shell or independant zones? Heating and chemistry scale in a big way at this volume so insulation is absolutely premium. Ask for monthly running costs in your specific climate. Especially if you have a salt set up since corrosion scales similar and in some regions, disposal can be heavily regulated or even illegal. The cost of UV or ozone can really add up.

TL;DR: know what you need it for most. Mind your electrics and if upgrades are needed. It is heavy so spec the foundation along with delivery method. Do you need single, dual, or triple temp? What is your running cost and sanitation needs? Is the swim length, width, and depth sufficient for your figure? Super important - how long is the warranty and what does it cover? Who you calling when you need an inevitable fix? Can you finance?

Cold plunge tubs in 2026: from DIY to luxury models - what to consider, what they cost, and what to ask

This is my second of a series of guides I wanted to write on backyard tubs, this one specifically to help people navigate the logistics of cold plunge setups. Because plunges can range from a chest freezer in the garage to 10k+ USD hot-and-cold units. What your dollar gets you is the chiller - a way to keep the water cold and clean. The insulation and sanitary considerations tends to be the difference between a chore or a fad and something long haul. Everything is about cost against convenience and upkeep. DYI tends to mean a chest freezer or tank with a drop in chiller. Plug-in standalone units tend to mean an integrated chiller while an insulated purpose built plunge add filtration and sanitation. If you want it to get you toasty as well, you are looking at hot-and-cold units. Nothing will be right for everyone's need or budget.

Chillers: the engine. The part that matters the most and what specs can be infuriatingly vague on. Just think about three numbers - cooling capacity (in horsepower or BTU), the lowest steady temperature, and recovery time (how it response to body heat). Weak chillers lag hard to cool down after you hop in. And if you live somewhere very hot, some cannot hold heat in hot garages or sweltering summers.

Insulation, Electrics, and Install: Thermos logic - insulation keeps the hot water hot and the cold water cold. Keep it in and the chiller cycles less which lowers power usage and extends the life of the compressor. Solo plunges tend to run 110V which don't need any special electrical hookups but your larger units and hot-and-cold builds usually require 240V which may mean an electrician outfit. Plan drainage. Plan for airflow and noise. Even freeze protection in certain climates against a crack in the chiller or plumbing. Fit check interior length and depth against your height if you want to sit or would rather recline.

Water Care: if you want to keep the same water (which most plunges do), you need filtration and sanitation or else you are draining and refilling all the time. Cold slows bacteria growth but it's there. Filters, like UV or ozone or a chemical routine plus circulation stretches your refill cycle to weeks rather than days. This is the biggest upgrade over a homebrew unit. If buying, ask how the water stays clean and how often you have to change it.

Cost: where most decisions start. DIY tends to run 500-2k USD depending on your chiller arrangement. Entry plug-in models trend 3k-5k. Purpose Built runs 5k-8k on average. Add on the hot option and we get 8k-10k and beyond. At each tier, as if your money is buying more reliable chilling, better insulation, better water care, and stronger warranties (specifically, the chiller itself which is most failure prone part). Or is it just aesthetics and features you won't use after a few dozen plunges.

TL;DR: ask yourself or your retailer about cooling capacity, lowest temp, and refractory period needs. Chiller is everything. Is it right for your climate (summer and winter)? How is the water filtered and sanitized? How often do you refill? Is your electrical already set up? What is the monthly run cost? Does it fit your body dimensions? How long is the warranty and what does it cover? Who services? Is financing available if necessary? Make sure your money earns longevity and meets your needs.

What your budget actually buys you: a 2026 hot tub price guide

Reading through this sub and r/hottub, I keep finding that most prospective hot tub buyers don't really know where to start in their search beyond price point. I wanted to write a little guide using budget as a jump point and what to think about beyond dollars. Especially for each unique need, what you should ask, and what gets missed. But in brief, price tends to reflect four things - how well it holds heat, how sturdy it is built, equipment inside it, and the support behind that. Jets, lights, and styling are all secondary considerations. And don't forget to factor in any cost of changes to your deck to hold the tub (or a quality rigid pad), an increase in electrical or water utilities, replacing foam covers, and whether your warranty covers just parts or labor. And if you are getting a salt system, extra for disposal and levels monitoring on top of generally shorter tub lifespans.

Economy tier (5k USD and below): mostly 2-4 seat shells, 100V plug-and-play models that use standard outlets. No electrician needed. Plus roto-molded builds that can do right by harsh climates. Common downside is that 110V reheats slower. Trade off is fewer jets with weaker power but some new multi-pump designs do get you close to 220V pressure. And some can be converted to 240V later but ideally, if that is a consideration, much better to start there. What is harder to spot in this tier is internal. Thin or partial foam insulation, basic controls, short warranties, and no service path. Best value in this price range is that full foam and spring for a quality sealed cover over features. Ask for it explicitly and if you have the right outlet, how long the warranty, and who fixes it?

Midrange tier (5k - 10k): This is where most people land. You get up to 5-7 seats, 220V, full (or at least, fuller) insulation, lounge seating, tougher cabinets, longer warrenties, and you start seeing water-care upgrades like ozone or UV. Jet count will dominate marketing but quality of placement beats quantity. Be wary of proprietary equipment. These bigger tubs start to really weigh in and can be north of 1k pounds empty so a level reinforced pad, delivery access, and electrical upgrades are real line items. Plan not just on the weight with water but bodies as well. Solid wood frames are more common and durable. Ask if the intended amount of people can sit comfortable, if equipment is industry standard, and how the warranty breaks across the shell, equipment, labor, etc.

Highend (10k+): most models will be of the +++ side of this range but can still find flagship shells, premium cabinets, advanced pumps, top insulation, and long warranties on the low cap. You start see swim spas which can get up around 20ft and run 40k or more with features like soak zones and cold plunge (but those deserve their own guide). The thing to be aware of here is diminishing returns. Sales stake on styling, badges, and complex features that will be the first to fail and hard to repair like audio and lighting. All the hallmarks of quality already mentioned should be standard. Now, you are really focusing on longevity and a good service network. Ask if you are paying for what you know you want, what you will still use in five years, and whether a midrange tub suits your needs already.

TL;DR: insulation is the biggest running cost. The cover is big for ongoing heat loss. How long your warranty is good for, yeah, but also what exactly it covers. Figure out your electrics and site prep. Everything leaks or breaks eventually so service is about parts and support. Ask for realistic numbers on day-to-day costs as well as financing if necessary. And sit in the shell if possible to make sure it is comfortable.

Also, ask and keep an eye out for discounts and check official websites. Waiting a month for clearance or seasonal sales can drop that price 10% or so. Hope this helps some. If anyone has questions, happy to answer.
