Soooo am I a toolmaker or something now?

Disclaimer: Not a toolmaker.

I ran out of X travel on my lathe and have to cut the face on this weldment. Modified a DDJNR-164 into an offset facing tool. Gained me an extra ~1.5 inches of X. Time to see how this shit show works out.

23 Calcutta BFS Brake Issue

Hey guys, weird issue with my 23 CC BFS. When I turn the brakes on to the upper 3/4 to full setting and actuate the reel upside down, there is an obvious brake/spool rub happening. Spool tension is set to just a small amount of side to side play. I don’t use the brakes any higher than just past the middle setting and this sound is not present at that level.

It only happens when it’s held upside down. No, I’m not fishing upside down (lol), but it leads me to believe there is something loose/off in the braking system. Reel is a year old, purchased brand new and fished weekly since. I take good care of my equipment.

Anybody experienced this before? Any insight is welcomed and appreciated!

IMTS First Timer

12 years in the industry, five years as a full time mill and lathe programmer. The company I’m with is sending me to IMTS for both my first time and the first time they’ve sent anyone in their history either. I already have a *massive* list of vendors I’m looking to visit, but I’m having doubts I’ll be able to make it all happen.

I’ll be there four days. Hoping to not get burnt out by my second day on the floor. Any tips from IMTS vets on how to best handle the show?

Lemme rant for a second

Company bought an ST-30Y. Six warranty calls in the first year we’ve had it. As of yesterday, it cannot hand jog in the Z- direction. I know it’s likely just a dirty sensor, and I’ll be dealing with it, but I’m still annoyed. Add that to the list of issues with the bar feeder and tool probe as well. Six warranty repair visits in a year. Irritating to say the least.

To add insult to injury, our first Haas lathe had 13 warranty issues in the first year as well. Mostly controller related and our HFO covered them all. Still ridiculous.

Yet they bought another…

Anyway, have a good day y’all.

Collet chucks are neat.

Been putting the new QG-80 to work. This thing is fucking sweet. Some of the best ball screws I’ve ever turned.

Loongze Reels - B50, B70 or B100?

Looking to replace an Ark Gravity BFS that is currently sitting on a Daiwa Tatula XT BF rod. It’s a 6’ 5” light power fast action, rated 2-12g lure weight. I’m a bass angler and typically throw lures between 3 and 8 grams on my setups. I mostly use 8lb Sunline FC Sniper or 10lb Sufix 832 with an FC leader depending on the application.

Of the Loongze round body bait finesse reels, which one do you guys think would pair up best with this rod for my uses? I have a 23 Calcutta Conquest BFS on another rod that I absolutely love, but I don’t want to spend that kind of money on this setup.

Aero Precision News

I’ll start with a link to the thread I got my info from. Check it out.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AeroPrecision/s/SQAliebsgA

Apparently Aero officially filed bankruptcy two days ago. They’re going through a receivership process while the “core team remains intact.” The “core team” has been part of the problem, so I’m not sure what this means for their future.

The Solus is a great action, so hopefully they’ll restructure and keep producing it, or if they finally meet their end, they sell the rights and TDP to someone else. We’ll see.

Tatula XT BF and Some Fish

Took a new rod out this morning. Daiwa Tatula XT BF, specifically the 652LFB. Paired it with an Ark Gravity BFS that’s been noisy and rough. Ark refused to repair or replace it, so that’s irritating. Fishing it as is and not buying another.

Started the morning off with a decent largemouth with a missing upper lip. Still healthy. Didn’t bring my scale, but big enough to make me smile. Followed it up with a couple dink largies and then finished off with a little smallmouth. Overall, great morning fishing from the bank.

The rod fishes pretty well. I wanted a two piece rod with the right backbone for bass that I can throw in the car and not take up a ton of room. Sensitivity was ok throwing a jika rigged TRD craw. I can map out the bottom decently well, but not like I can with my Dobyns 691C. There is also a considerable price difference between them. Casts 5-8 grams very well and it handled the larger fish nicely.

For $100, I can’t complain. I wish Dobyns would start offering two piece options in the Sierra Ultra Finesse series, but this will do.

Dice baits - How are we rigging them?

I’m late to the party with dice baits and am just starting to fish them. Bought a pack of Z Man Fuzzy Nuggetz in black. Neko rigging them (I guess), with a 1/32oz tungsten nail weight and a Gamakatsu #1 wide gap weedless finesse hook. Pitching and dropping it into sparse vegetation, 3-8ft deep. Started throwing them on a Tsurinoya Light Game 662L, but moved over to my Dobyns SUF 691C with a Calcutta Conquest BFS XG.

Hit a small local lake this morning on the canoe. Gained a ton of confidence throwing them, but lost three decent fish. The hook just would not set. At first I thought the issue was power/action related after losing the first fish, but even after switching to the stouter Dobyns rod, I lost two more. Switched to a jika rigged craw due to hookup ratio issues.

So, how are you guys rigging your dice baits? Hook recommendations? I gained a lot of confidence with them today and have come to the conclusion that they’re extremely productive, but consistently losing fish just suuuuucks.

Where do your shops/companies draw the line with engineering?

I’ve been at my current company for coming up on ten years. We’re an in house manufacturer of our own product line. That’s as much as I’ll divulge there. Full time programmer. I’ll hit the floor a few times a week to run some turning jobs, R&D parts, or fixtures I’ve designed.

Here’s my dilemma. Our engineering department has some… Shortcomings. A lot of them. In the last couple years, I’ve had engineers coming into my office requesting (sometimes borderline demanding) assistance with fitment/clearance/tolerance, material applications, GD&T, etc. These issues are brought to me when the build team hits a dead stop with parts compatibility or function and up-revs are needed. I’ve been helping out, but it’s starting to feel like a bit much and I’m being leaned on heavily. Especially with my title and current pay.

So, where do you guys draw the line where these task should be accomplished by engineering? I’m happy to work with engineers on prototypes, scaling for manufacturing, things like that. But this feels like it’s outside of my wheelhouse as a machinist, as I have responsibilities to my department that need to be my priority.
