Frosh Fall Course Schedule Review

Hello,
I'm an incoming frosh, and I wanted to ask whether this would be an OK list of courses to take in my first quarter at Stanford. For reference, I received 5s in AP CS (equivalent of CS106A) and AP Calculus BC (equivalent of MATH19-21). I'm retaking CS106A because I want stronger foundations in coding as I'm considering majoring in MS&E, which requires more CS courses.

My course plan is as follows:
COLLEGE101, PWR, CS 106A, and MATH51 (17 units)

Questions on skipping to econ 50 and math 51

Hi,

I'm an incoming frosh and I'm looking to which courses to take for fall quarter. I got 5's on AP Micro, AP Macro, and AP Calculus BC, and all 3 were pretty easy for me, but I'm still concerned/worried as I come from an international school that's not that rigorous.

  1. Am I really ready to handle Econ 50? I've heard that Econ 1 is quite a difficult class, so I'm not sure how I would fare in Econ 50 even if I was fairly good at econ in high school. I also saw in the course descriptions that Econ 50 and Econ 50Q use concepts from multivariable calc, which I have no experience with. How extensive is the multivariable calculus in Econ 50?

  2. How difficult is Math 51 compared to AP Calculus? I think our teacher pushed us hard in high school but it never went beyond the boundaries of the AP curriculum for the most part.

  3. Any other tips on preparing for these courses (either during the summer or during the semester would be greatly appreciated!) I'm also curious as to whether reviewing AP materials would be a good strategy/enough to do well in these courses.

ESF + COLLEGE vs COLLEGE + PWR

I'm a profro filling out their Approaching Stanford forms and I'm not sure what to choose between ESF and COLLEGE + PWR. I have heard that not a lot of people are placed into ESF, and none of the topics really seem to resonate with me except for ESF 28 & 28A, but I'd love to have more info on what the workload for either option might look like. For reference, the ESF courses offered this year are:

ESF 17 & 17A

ESF 18 & 18A
ESF 22 & 22A

ESF 28 & 28A

ESF 29 & 29A

ESF 30 & 30A

Also, where are the best places to gauge the difficulty/workload of a certain course?

Thank you so much!

Hi, I'm an incoming frosh and I was wondering what are some must-have things that I should bring from home. Would appreciate any other advice because no one I personally know attends Stanford!!

Also, how necessary/useful is an iPad for notetaking in class? I already have one, but it's pretty old and the battery cycle is not in good shape, so I'm willing to buy a new one w/ the back-to-school discount + education discount if it's worth it.
