Heard this backstory saying MacReady is a Vietnam War veteran.

But when I looked into it, it doesn’t seem to be officially confirmed, I might’ve missed some sources so feel free to correct me if there’s any evidence or articles about it. Either way, since it still feels somewhat plausible it’s inspired me to make a comic about him before the movie.
