Question about dual certified unions

I have a general question about multi-trade union apprenticeship programs, specifically Local 486’s five-year program.

Does completing the apprenticeship prepare graduates to work as plumbers, HVAC technicians, gas fitters, and pipefitters, or do apprentices typically specialize in one trade while receiving some training in the others?

I’m interested in understanding how many different trades a graduate is actually qualified to work in after completing the program and whether additional certifications or licensing are required.

Thank you for your time!

Question

I’m in Ocean City, Maryland and I’m looking at starting an electrical apprenticeship through IEC Chesapeake. I haven’t found a job yet, but they told me they’ll help me find one during the apprenticeship process. They also said that while I have to pay the tuition up front, most employers usually reimburse or pay for it after about 60 days of employment, although I’m not completely sure how that works yet.

My long-term goal is to join IBEW Local 24. If I work for a non-union contractor for about a year through this apprenticeship, would I still be able to apply and switch over to Local 24? Would any of the experience or schooling count, or would I have to start over as a first-year apprentice?

I also have the option to pursue HVAC through HACCMD or IEC Chesapeake instead, but I missed most of the application deadlines for the union apprenticeship programs this year. I’m trying to decide whether I should start with IEC Chesapeake now to gain electrical experience, wait and apply to the union when applications open again, or pursue the HVAC route through HACCMD/IEC Chesapeake instead.

A few other questions I have:

  • If my end goal is Local 24, would you recommend starting with IEC Chesapeake or waiting and applying directly to the union?
  • Does Local 24 give any credit for non-union work hours or classroom training?
  • Does having a year of non-union experience make me a stronger applicant?
  • If an employer reimburses my tuition, is there usually a requirement to stay with the company for a certain amount of time? If I left for the union, would I have to pay that money back?
  • Has anyone here switched from a non-union apprenticeship to Local 24? What was the process like?
  • How do the training, pay, benefits, and career opportunities compare between IEC Chesapeake and Local 24?
  • Since I live in Ocean City, what kind of commute or travel should I realistically expect with Local 24?
  • Looking back, if your goal was to end up in Local 24, would you still start with a non-union apprenticeship, wait for the union, or pursue HVAC instead?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s gone through this or has experience with Local 24. Thanks!

Imagine Foolio’s Life with Quantum Theory

The other day I was scrolling on tiktok and saw people yapping about a “Quantum Theory” basically a theory where you never die in your own reality, I personally don’t believe in it but it interested me a little bit and had me thinking, imagine somewhere in another dimension Foolio’s still alive and active trolling, going crazy with music turnt up after surviving his 5th or 6th attempt on his life 😭
