Why was Kaine so cruel to Helena at Spirefell even when Morrough’s eyes couldn’t see them?
Just finished my first read & starting part 1 again. What’s your understanding of why Kaine says so many cruel things to Helena during Part 1?
My memory is that he later explains he had to play the part so that Morrough wouldn’t suspect him.
But I think I’m remembering that we eventually learn Helena’s room is one of the only places that Morrough doesn’t have eyes at Spirefell. And I think I’m also remembering that even where he has eyes, Morrough can only see and not hear what’s going on.
So if Morrough couldn’t hear, couldn’t Kaine have somehow communicated with Helena bits of the truth over time? Or all at once in her room?
Did Kaine, like the Eternal Flame, not trust that Helena could play her part if she knew the whole truth? Or did Kaine sincerely hope she wouldn’t remember the whole truth (I know he says something to this effect in part 3), so much so that he was willing to go to any length including cruelty? Or was he so angry with her that a part of the cruelty was real for him?
