Ranking Every Eurovision Edition of the 21st century purely based on song quality - Part 2 (2010s)

Like the title says, I’m going to be ranking every Eurovision edition since 2000 solely on the quality of the songs, so no stagings or live performances will be taken into account. In order to not make you read the longest Reddit post ever made, I’m splitting it into 3 parts by decade, so this will cover the editions from 2010-2019. Click here for part 1.

In addition to the rankings, I’ll also name my favorite, least favorite, most underrated, and most overrated songs from that year. For the overrated and underrated songs I’ll be factoring in both where it ended in the final standings and also what the general community consensus is.

Please respect that these are just my opinions and are in no means objective. You guys mostly agreed with my 2000s list but I feel like this one will be much more divisive.

#10 - 2011 🇩🇪
Favorite - 🇬🇪 One More Day
Least Favorite - 🇭🇷 Celebrate
Overrated - 🇩🇰 New Tomorrow
Underrated - 🇨🇾 San Aggelos S’agapisa

While not nearly as bad as the worst years from the 2000s, 2011 is definitely the worst edition of the 2010s. A lot of the songs from this year were just very confusing to me and I didn’t really understand the appeal of them, like Boom Boom, I Love Belarus, and Stand By among others. There were some decent songs from this year, but overall it’s a pretty weak year, which was reflected in how widespread the results ended up being.

#9 - 2013 🇸🇪
Favorite - 🇳🇴 I Feed You My Love
Least Favorite - 🇲🇹 Tomorrow
Overrated - 🇦🇿 Hold Me
Underrated - 🇦🇱 Identitet

2013 was just kinda unremarkable for me. The worst songs were bland and the best songs were good but not great. I think it’s because most of the songs were more modern (by 2013 standards) and radio friendly in order to attempt to be more commercially viable like Euphoria was the year prior so they just ended up being not that memorable.

#8 - 2019 🇮🇱
Favorite - 🇦🇿 Truth
Least Favorite - 🇩🇪 Sister
Overrated - 🇷🇺 Scream
Underrated - 🇷🇸 Kruna

This might be a bit controversial but I didn’t like 2019’s selection of songs that much. There was an abnormal amount of nothing burger songs like the Sister by S!sters who weren’t actually sisters, Bigger than us, 22, Heaven, Home, Stay, Limits and I can keep going. I think there’s some good songs here and obviously Arcade was a big hit, but compared to what had come right before and what came after, 2019 doesn’t really hold up.

#7 - 2017 🇺🇦
Favorite - 🇮🇹 Occidentali’s Karma
Least Favorite - 🇪🇸 Do it for Your Lover
Overrated - 🇷🇴 Yodel It
Underrated - 🇱🇹 Rain of Revolution

2017 wasn’t a bad year, but there’s a clear reason why people look at it as a weak year. When 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018 were so strong, 2017 ends up getting largely forgotten about. With that said, there’s some things to like about this year such as Italy’s greatest song since their return (in my opinion) and a lot of songs that stood out with how unique they were in the context of Eurovision like Rain of Revolution and Amar Pelos Dois.

#6 - 2010 🇳🇴
Favorite - 🇹🇷 We Could Be the Same
Least Favorite - 🇨🇾 Life Looks Better in the Spring
Overrated - 🇦🇿 Drip Drop
Underrated - 🇨🇭Il Pleut de l’Or

I actually quite enjoyed 2010, but the mid-to-late 2010s were so strong that it only lands at the bottom half of this list. Yeah you still had some songs that were extremely dated, but this year produced so many classics and birthed so many legends like Hera Bjork, Lena, Sunstroke Project, and Paula Selling & Ovi amongst others.

#5 - 2016 🇸🇪
Favorite - 🇪🇪 Play
Least Favorite - 🇨🇭The Last of our Kind
Overrated - 🇫🇷 J’ai Cherché
Underrated - 🇪🇪 Play

Now this is where things really get good. When I first listened to the 2016 songs I honestly had a hard time figuring out who my winner is cause there’s so many quality songs at the top between Play (ROBBED), LoveWave, You are the Only One, 1944, and Sound of Silence. Overall there was just a lot of songs I look back at fondly which makes 2016 more memorable for me, but it only gets better from here.

#4 - 2015 🇦🇹
Favorite - 🇦🇺 Tonight Again
Least Favorite - 🇭🇺 Wars for Nothing
Overrated - 🇸🇪 Heroes
Underrated - 🇧🇾 Time

This might also be controversial but 2015 was awesome in my opinion. Yeah a lot of the songs feel a bit generic but they really resonated with me anyway. Like Time and Tonight Again aren’t revolutionary songs but they’re absolute bangers. There’s also the total guilty pleasure of I Want Your Love and who can forget the 2 great songs which are both named Warrior.

#3 - 2014 🇩🇰
Favorite - 🇦🇲 Not Alone
Least Favorite - 🇱🇻 Cake to Bake
Overrated - 🇸🇪 Undo
Underrated - 🇮🇱 Same Heart

I think 2014 is iconic for me because it’s when I first heard about Eurovision as my middle school French teacher was teaching us about it and showed us the song Moustache (which is a banger). With that said, this has got to be the most diverse set of music I’ve seen in Eurovision. Just about every genre is covered and there’s a lot of songs that are very unique and we haven’t heard anything like them since. Besides the 2 awful songs that for some reason both have “cake” in their names, I think just about every song has some great or memorable qualities to them.

#2 - 2012 🇦🇿
Favorite - 🇸🇪 Euphoria
Least Favorite - 🇮🇱 Time
Overrated - 🇷🇺 Party for Everybody
Underrated - 🇨🇭Unbreakable

2012 marked a turning point in the contest where the music really started to feel like it had caught up to the greater music scene around the world. Obviously Euphoria was legendary but so many countries sent my favorite entry of all time for them (🇷🇸🇬🇷🇭🇺🇲🇰) and there’s also a ton of* guilty pleasures like Stay, Woki Mit Deim *Popo, *and Beautiful *Song amongst others. Maybe it’s nostalgia for the fact that my music taste is heavily influenced by what I liked to listen to around 2012, but that edition really delivered for me.

#1 - 2018 🇵🇹
Favorite - 🇨🇭Stones
Least Favorite - 🇸🇲 Who We Are
Overrated - 🇫🇷 Merci
Underrated - 🇲🇪 Inje

And finally we got the first ever Eurovision that I watched, which just so happens to be what I consider the best year in Eurovision history (from a purely musical standpoint). You’d have to get into the 30s of my list to find a song that I think is just ok. Almost every country in 2018 locked in and sent certified bangers.

Eurovision was at its best in the late 2010s with insane quality almost every year. Stay tuned for the conclusion of the series with the 2020s.

Ranking Every Eurovision Edition of the 21st century purely based on song quality - Part 1 (2000s)

Like the title says, I’m going to be ranking every Eurovision edition since 2000 solely on the quality of the songs, so no stagings or live performances will be taken into account. In order to not make you read the longest Reddit post ever made, I’m splitting it into 3 parts by decade, so this will cover the editions from 2000-2009.

In addition to the rankings, I’ll also name my favorite, least favorite, most underrated, and most overrated songs from that year. For the overrated and underrated songs I’ll be factoring in both where it ended in the final standings and also what the general community consensus is.

Please respect that these are just my opinions and are in no means objective

#10 - 2002 🇪🇪
Favorite - 🇫🇷 Il Faut Du Temps
Least Favorite - 🇱🇹 Happy You
Overrated - 🇪🇸 Europe’s Living a Celebration
Underrated - 🇧🇪 Sister

The 2000s were really brought down by incredibly dated and painfully generic songs and that was really evident in 2002, which out of 24 entries only managed to produce one song that I actually liked. Admittedly, that one song is a very good song and probably one of my favorite entries from France, but it’s not enough to overcome the fact that it’s the only song from 2002 that I don’t immediately forget about right after listening to it.

#9 - 2001 🇩🇰
Favorite - 🇬🇷 Die for You
Least Favorite - 🇷🇺 Lady Alpine Blue
Overrated - 🇪🇸 Dile Que La Quiero
Underrated - 🇧🇦 Hano

2001 is a similar story to 2002 but I thought a few more of the songs were decent. There were unique standouts like Slovenia that made the collection of songs more memorable and even the generic songs were a little more fun. With that said, it’s still not close to a good edition.

#8 - 2004 🇹🇷
Favorite - 🇺🇦 Wild Dances
Least Favorite - 🇨🇭Celebrate
Overrated - 🇧🇦 In the Disco
Underrated - 🇮🇸 Heaven

I thought the addition of semifinals and an expanded field would lead to better quality, but in reality it just meant more bad or dull songs. With that said, I think my top 5 songs from 2004 are genuinely really good and felt modern. On the other hand, the bad songs from the early years of the semifinal era are among some of the worst songs I’ve ever heard.

#7 - 2000 🇸🇪
Favorite - 🇷🇺 Solo
Least Favorite - 🇮🇱 Sa’me’akh
Overrated - 🇲🇹 Desire
Underrated - 🇧🇪 Envíe de Vivre

The only edition on this list that I wasn’t alive for, I thought this would be the worst but I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of songs from 2000. There’s a decent amount of genuinely pleasant songs to listen to. What holds the turn of the century back from being higher though is that none of the songs really blew me away, there’s just a higher amount of songs that are fine.

#6 - 2005 🇺🇦
Favorite - 🇳🇴 In my Dreams
Least Favorite - 🇩🇰 Talking to you
Overrated - 🇷🇴 Let me Try
Underrated - 🇸🇮 Stop

2005 is where things started to take a turn for the better on musical level. I can confidently say about half of the songs are pretty decent from this year and the best songs from this year are certified bangers. I still think the quality wasn’t quite where things were later in the decade, but I felt a noticeable increase in quality of the average entry in 2005.

#5 - 2008 🇷🇸
Favorite - 🇺🇦 Shady Lady
Least Favorite - 🇮🇪 Irelande Douze Points
Overrated - 🇧🇦 Pokušaj
Underrated -🇨🇭Era Stupendo

Ah 2008, known for an abnormal amount of very unserious entries. I expected this to be much lower but honestly I’ve kinda warmed up to a lot of the clear televote bait entries. Like yeah songs like Vodka, DJ, Take me Away, and Even If are objectively bad, but they’re fun and catchy in a disaster bop kinda way. With that said, the bottom of this year is some of the worst songs I’ve ever heard so it can’t go any higher.

#4 - 2003 🇱🇻
Favorite - 🇧🇪 Sanomi
Least Favorite - 🇦🇹 Weil Der Mensch Zählt
Overrated - 🇳🇴 I’m not Afraid to Move on
Underrated - 🇬🇧 Cry Baby

Honestly, 2003 was pretty good. There were a lot inventive songs from this year that are very memorable and I’m not gonna apologize for saying that Cry Baby is pretty decent in studio lol.

#3 - 2006 🇬🇷
Favorite - 🇫🇮 Hard Rock Hallelujah
Least Favorite - 🇬🇧 Teenage Life
Overrated - 🇷🇺 Never Let You Go
Underrated - 🇦🇩 Senses Tu

2006 was just an absolute classic year, from legendary disaster bops such as Congratulations to the greatest rock song in Eurovision history, there was something for everybody.

#2 - 2007 🇫🇮
Favorite - 🇫🇮 Leave me Alone
Least Favorite - 🇧🇪 Love Power
Overrated - 🇺🇦 Dancing Lasha Tumbai
Underrated - 🇨🇿 Kabát

Before you guys come after me I like Dancing Lasha Tumbai, it’s just well outside my top 10. 2007 had so many fantastic songs like the most robbed song ever Salvem El Món and, of course, the peak of Balkan ballads in Molitva. I also wanna shoutout Visionary Dream, They Can’t Stop the Spring, Yassou Maria, and so many other songs that really stuck with me.

#1 - 2009 🇷🇺
Favorite - 🇺🇦 Be My Valentine
Least Favorite - 🇧🇪 Copycat
Overrated - 🇷🇺 Mamo
Underrated - 🇧🇾 Eyes that Never Lie

2009 lands at number one almost by default. With the re-introduction of juries, the song quality improved drastically. Artists and songwriters had to find ways to win over both the televote and the jury and we ended up with some really great songs that were both well put together and still entertaining and catchy. It really marked a new era for the contest entering the 2010s

The 2000s were a mess for Eurovision from a song quality standpoint but I was pleasantly surprised by how many years had a pretty decent selection of songs. Stay tuned for part 2 where I do the 2010s which were much better!

Which year (preferably one that doesn’t already have one) would have the most insane iceberg?

The Eurovision iceberg has become an iconic tradition every year for Eurovision fans as it acts as a reminder of all the random stuff that happened in Eurovision throughout the year and also includes super obscure and absolutely unhinged stuff that people who were following the contest regularly weren’t even aware of.

However, the iceberg hasn’t always been around (I’m not sure when it first started) so I want to know which past years you guys think would’ve had the craziest icebergs.

I’m talking years that had some insane things happen that most people don’t know about, cause something like Sylvia Knight crashing out wouldn’t be deep at all on a 2006 iceberg for example.

For me I feel like there was probably a lot of unhinged stuff going on in 2008, 2009, and 2012 but I have no basis other than vibes for that.

What do you guys think?

Working on a Wizard FPS where they cast spells using guns. How would I implement a spell-crafting mechanic?

I’ve had this idea for a long time now. A multiplayer shooter where everyone plays as magic users, but in-universe they use firearms to cast their spells.

There would be many different gun-types ranging from old-school muskets to modern weaponry to even futuristic guns, and the gimmick was going to be that the type of firearm you use would make the spells you cast react differently.

For example, if you’re using a telekinesis spell with a shotgun it would fire a concussive blast that makes opponents fly backwards, but if you use it with an automatic weapon then it could act like the gravity gun in a sense.

However, since there’s a limited amount of gun and spell combos, I wanted to implement a spell-crafting system for variety so in theory no two players would roll with the same loadout (unless there was a very clear meta but that’s a different issue).

A lot of games have had interesting spell creation mechanics in the past, but things kind of fall apart when you factor in the fact that different firearms make the spells behave differently, so there’s a limited amount of customization you could have with the actual spells themselves since you won’t be able to choose if it’s continuous, AOE, single blast, etc.

How do I implement the spell-creation mechanic where it’s interesting and works seamlessly with the gun mechanic? Or do I scrap that idea entirely and just stick to a limited amount of spell and gun combos that all feel distinct? I’d appreciate any feedback!

Positions to look for if I have a Communications Minors?

I graduated college last year with a degree in computer science and a year later I still don’t have a job. However, I had a minor in communication alongside my major and I was thinking that could be useful to help me find a job.

Seems like most marketing jobs are more aimed at comm majors or business students and I really can’t seem to find a job that I would be able to land with just a communication minor.

Do you guys know any positions to look for as someone who only minored in communication and still has technical expertise and experience in database management?

Mortal Kombat: Konquest - an open world RPG set in the Mortal Kombat Universe

Back during the Mortal Kombat series’s infamous 3D era, Mortal Kombat: Deception gave us an open-world story mode titled Konquest Mode that was so awesome that both Midway and Netherrealm decided to never do that again for some reason. While it had the jank, bad voice acting, and questionable writing of that era, fans still found the concept of all the realms being fully explorable to be awesome and Shujinko, who’s objectively not a very good or interesting character, became a cult favorite in the fanbase.

My idea is to expand on that mode into its own game.

Timeline-wise, I have a very interesting idea that fits into Mortal Kombat 1’s timeline so I will be doing that for this pure hypothetical game.

You start as Shujinko who’s beginning his training as a Shaolin Monk. You’re being trained by Kung Lao and Raiden and the first part of the game acts as a tutorial where you can only explore Earthrealm for now.

You can explore a lot of Earthrealm and interact a lot of the usual characters from the game, plus the characters who were just mentioned but not actually present (Kai for example).

Shujinko’s absorption ability would make for an excellent RPG element as you can unlock new skills, powers, and fighting styles in skill trees. Additionally, you’d be able to customize Shujinko’s gear, hairstyle, and weapons that he can use.

The combat would be somewhat similar to Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks but not as mindless as there would be a lot more single encounters.

As far as implementing Kameos goes, I think it would be interesting to get to have a follower similar to how Bethesda RPGs do it who could help you in fights unless it’s a 1v1. The followers could range from random NPCs to actual Mortal Kombat characters like Erron Black as a hired gun.

Each realm would be fully explorable and every character in the series would be discoverable somewhere in the world, including obscure characters from the comics or games like Wu Lei from Armageddon’s Konquest mode. There would also be side quests and secrets to discover, like Shang Tsung’s island which has a lot of unique gear like Shao Kahn’s hammer from the original games. You could also join other factions as part of certain quest lines but unlike Skyrim you wouldn’t eventually become the leader of every single one.

Also, Deception’s story mode had an interesting gimmick where there are time jumps throughout the story and Shujinko grows old by the end. This would be difficult to implement because that would not leave much room for another game in the series if all the characters are old or dead by the end, but I think there could be one time jump at the end of the tutorial where Shujinko is now a young adult preparing to fight in his first Mortal Kombat tournament. Then, the main conflict begins when General Shao unleashes Onaga and overthrows the Outworld government. This time jump would also be a good way to introduce the Kombat kids

Now for the twist: throughout the story, Shujinko is having visions of himself as a power hungry maniac who brutalizes his opponents. Eventually, however, it’s revealed that these are flashbacks to the events of Kung Lao’s arcade ending in MK1 and your memories and abilities were erased. That moment could be a major turning point where you get to decide if you want to be bitter and vengeful or forgive the Shaolin Monks. If you choose vengeance you join Onaga, who has turned out to not be just a savage beast and has killed General Shao, and finish the rest of the game on the evil path, but you unlock some sick dragon abilities. Otherwise, you can continue on the “good” path for the rest of the story and you eventually get the abilities of Liu Kang and Geras.

If Netherrealm was cool they’d make this game, but alas, it’s just gonna live out its days as a concept in a Reddit thread.

Thinking of using this movement system as a reference for the physics of my roller hockey game. Any ideas of how to properly implement it?

I’m working on a roller hockey project in unity and I was having a hard time coming up with a good physics system for the skating, that is supposed to feel different from ice skating, when I came across Paper Mario TTYD’s roll mode as a perfect reference for how the skating can work.

However, I’m having some trouble figuring out how to actually implement that, specifically when it comes to the changing of direction and the collisions as the player would still have an upright collision as well that would directly intersect with this rolling cylinder.

How would you go about designing this type of movement system in Unity?

Well this didn’t age well…

Every time I searched Eurovision on Instagram I saw this post and it’s especially funny given the results.

Congrats on your first ever win Bulgaria!

If I recall correctly, the rule is each artist is allowed up to 3 ALBMs, so here’s what I’d do if I was competing.

1. Symphonic/Orchestral cover of my song - I always love the epic covers with a choir and large orchestra so I’d do that

2. Cover of Nije Ljubav Stvar (Serbia 2012) - I’m from Serbia and that’s probably my favorite song they’ve sent

3. Cover of Time (Belarus 2015) - I’d wanna do a more deep cut NQ entry that I really like and Time is a perfect candidate for that

What would you guys do for your ALBMs?
