A night of Dujac

Another get together with my wine group friends, what a great night of indulging in a cross section of Domaine Dujac white and red wine. They are still very young but drinking so well.

Here was the roster:

Frederic Savart Bulle de Rose Champange

2009 Domaine Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis Blanc

2019 Domain Dujac Les Folatieres 1er cru

2021 Domaine Dujac Les Folatieres Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru

2019 Domain Dujac Les Combettes Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Les Combettes Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru

2021 Domaine Dujac Morey Saint Denis

2021 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin

2022 Domaine Dujac Les Beaumonts Vosne-Romanee 1er cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Aux Malconsorts Vosne-Romanee 1er cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux Grand Cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Clos De La Roche Grand Cru

2023 Domaine Dujac Close Saint Denis Grand Cru

There you have it, 5 white and 8 red Dujac. My top 3 were the Clos De La Roche, Echezeaux, and the 2019 Les Folatieres.

Will be back with more detailed tasting notes.

New World Chardonnay battle

Last month I had ask this sub on some recommendations to bring to a new world Chardonnay battle. Here are what the bottles were. From the inputs of this group, I decided to bring a 2019 White Stone. Someone else actually brought a 2023 White Bone as well, what a great way to taste the two bottling.

Unfortunately, there were so many, I didn't take very good notes. My personal preference was the White Bones/White Stone, Koonsgard, and Kistler.

Some of the bottles there:

2015 Chateau Montelena

2023 Even Keel

2022 Kongsgaard

2018 Kistler

2020 Mayacamas

2019 Errazuriz Las Pizarras

2019 White Stones

2023 White Bones

2012 Pearl Morrisette Chardonnay Sonoma County

2020 Dobbins Chardonnary

2023 Bannockburn

2020 Felton Rd Block 6

Evening with some big bottles

Another wonderful monthly wine dinner this week with my wine group. This time there wasn't any theme to the tasting, but it was bring a bottle that is minimum $500. Quite a wide range of wonderful bottles were represented.

1986 Solaia - A deep red/brown colour, with layers of cherry, forest floor, and leather. Medium body and integrated tannin. Still taste very fresh for a 40 year old bottle, can last another 10 years.

1999 Cheval Blanc - Fresh herbs, black/blue fruits, and earthy spices on the nose. Good amount of minerals and slight veg notes. Medium body structured, tannins are very fine. Expected more, but maybe got over shadowed.

2001 Latour - Deep dark ruby/purple colour. Very long nose of black currents, vanilla, and smoky oak. Very finesse, supple elegant taste. Jammy black fruits, leather, and truffles. One of my fave of the evening.

2019 Haut Brion - What a wine, even though it is definitely young and needs many more years, the potential is definitely there. the aromas of anise, cassis, and earthy was obvious. A good balance of ripe tannins and acidity provide a long finish. Will be a legend in 20 years time.

2011 Vega Sicillia Unico - A very muscular wine, nose of plum, blackberry, and sandalwood. Well rounded tannins and a long lasting finish.

2015 Vega Sicillia Unico - Expressive nose of cherry, cedar, and forest floor. What a silky taste with refined tannins and long earthy finish. It was very interesting to compare this 2015 with the 2011, they taste very different. Half the group preferred the 2011 and the other half 2015, inconclusive lol but all agree they both will age well for 20-30 years.

2018 Scarecrow - Nose of mixed red fruit and very intense alcohol. lovely palatte with super long finish, very high acid, strong tannin but not grippy. A very fine wine, but at the current price point, I will go towards the Bordeaux's more often than not.

This was an interesting tasting of Bordeaux, Tuscany, Spanish, and Napa wines.

An Epic byob tasting

Was at a recent wine tasting event at my local wine club. Not much of a theme, but guests were told to bring one of their 'Big Boy' bottles. There was 14 of us, and we were divided into 2 tables of 7. During dinner we tasted the wines we brought from our table. After dinner, we sampled the wines from the other table.

Was a very fun evening with great wines, and better company. Would probably be better if there was a theme or region, some of the wines definitely got overshadowed by the heavily/bolder wines.

Table 1:

2005 Domaine des Lambrays Clos Des Lambray Grand Cru: A very nice nose, dark fruits, very earthy, lovely taste, well balanced. I prefer this burg over the Clos Vougeot.

2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot Grand Cru: Nice nose, on taste, still very tannin.

2010 Chateaux Margaux : Wow, what a wine, very long nose, dark black fruit, smokey. Full bodied and well balanced, multiple layers of flavour. Still taste so young, long live ahead.

2019 La Mission Haut Brion: So so young still, but nose is lingering with black fruit and cigar. Full bodied and well structured, layers of tannins. While very enjoyable tonight, can't wait to try again in 10 years.

2015 Hindsight Bella Vetta: Very dark ruby in colour and total fruit bomb. Maybe a bit outclassed tonight

2015 Soldera Case Basse: Wow what a nose, sweet floral with black and red fruits. Very balanced taste with sweetness of red fruit more predominant, well structured tannin.

2013 Abreu Las Posadas: Deep purple in colour, nice nose of black fruit and leather/vanilla. full bodied and structured, long finish.

I was at this table, and my personal favourite was the Margaux and Soldera.

Table 2:

2006 Chateau Montelena Cab: Had a small pour of this, overshadowed

1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou: Complex nose of black fruit and cigar box. Medium bodied, and the tannins have really opened up. Drinking well now

1995 Pichon Baron: did not try

2002 Dominus: Nose of dark cherry and cedar. Very full bodied, taste very Napa though. Long finish.

2000 Pavie: Nice smokey nose, full bodied with earthiness. Drinking well now.

2009 Harlan Estate: Strong nose of dark fruit. Bursts of exotic spices, maturing now.

1998 Penfolds Grange: Sweet aroma of nose with black fruits and smoke. Very full bodied with black fruit and dark chocolate. Long finish.

Dessert:

1998 Chateau D'Yquem: Inviting nose of apricot and white flowers. taste of honey and manadrin. Full bodied but balanced.

All in all a great evening, again it was a challenge to taste all the wines since it was so different and all over the place. But I did appreciate the opportunity to sample some of these legends. WOTN for me between the Margaux and Soldera.

help pick a Barolo

2019 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Vigna Le Rocche or 2019 Roagna Pira Vecchie Viti ?

Price are pretty similar for both of them. Which one would you pick to drink in about 2-3 months time?

Recommend an interesting Chardonnay

I am going to a 'blind' Chardonnay themed dinner soon, and want to bring an interesting bottle that is not 'typical'. Some conditions, under $200, and try not to be a Burgundy Chardonnay. Where I am based, my access to wines are not the greatest, we are government controlled.

Some of the ones I can buy:

2021 Kosta Brown One Sixteen Chardonnay - $150 CAD

2021 Linqua Franca Sisters Char - $150

2020 Capensis Chardonnay - $145

2023 Rombauer Proprietor Selection - $133

2018 Shibumi Knoll Buena Tierra - $120

2022 Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna - $165

2022 Pahlmeyer Chardonnay - $200

2020 Checkmate Attack Chardonnay - $127

2022 Mayacamas Chardonnay - $121

Any interesting ones here? The wines will be ranked blind on their favourite of the night. Help me get some bragging rights :)
