Crating at shows

Hi Dog Show Friends!
My 1 year old smooth fox terrier recently became a champion! He is a great dog, loves showing, it is his favorite thing to do! But I need some tips and tricks for how I can make him crate trained at the dog show. He is great at home and in the car. But he won’t settle and stop barking in a new environment. Like I would love to be able to make a little setup for him while we wait for groups where he is content to just take a nap. But for right now that means we go back to the car. I want to try and get a handle on this while he is still young. Thank you so much for your help!

Encouragement to keep going!

Hi all puppy parents! Just wanted to say that my 1 year old smooth fox terrier has really started to feel more like his adult self. It gets better! He is settling into routine. I’m learning what his energy needs are. I’m taking care of his enrichment for his mentals. And my little guy became an akc champion at a may dog show. We know each other now. I know he loves long walks, exploring parks and lakes, and he genuinely loves the attention of being a show dog. He loves his pupcicle stuffed with chicken. Boiled chicken has been a godsend. I stuff it in kongs, anything!

He has turned into my best friend and he is adorable, I am so incredibly full of love for him. Don’t give up! Dexter was an older puppy, got him at 4.5 months. So he was behind in bite inhibition, socialization and getting used to being a city dog since we live in LA. But after many trips to Costco standing outside, having people give him treats and pets, he has adapted to city life and if he gets startled his tail goes right back up.

He isn’t perfect, we are still teaching him that our 18 yr old cat wants him to be chill around him 100% of the time, not 90%. But Jake the cat comes around often and they are coexisting better. He still has some separation anxiety and fomo but he is turning into a great dog and I’m confident he will get there.
