Well Hi Hello there, we WIP'd out yet?

Good lawd y'all have been keeping me on my toes the last couple of weeks with the content you've been sending me, and I have to admit... I have been having a lot of fun and am SO SO SO proud of all the authors out there doing the damn thing. Now... onto our WIP rec list...

The House in the Enchanted Forest by maplesdonut

Summary: caseworker regina mills longs for her mother’s approval. when she’s sent by her mother to investigate (read: find problems and shut down) an orphanage for magical youth located on a remote island, she knows she cannot fail. orphanage master emma swan will do anything to protect the six children under her watch (one of whom could bring about the destruction of the world).a remote island? an orphanage with secrets written in its walls? six rowdy magical children? what could possibly go wrong? (hubris voice)

Why it has me HEAVING: An SQ rewrite of the book “The House in the Cerulean Sea,” by T. J. Klune- this fic offers an absolutely enticing premise. I haven’t read the source material, so I’m not sure how much is cherry picked from the book- but good lord it is FUN. If you’ve ever read anything else by maplesdonut, then you know there are twists and turns around every corner that will keep you scrolling well into the night. Their fics are always just an absolute delight to read and this one is no exception. I would also suggest checking out Komorebi- an extremely ambitious Season 2b rewrite, maplesdonut attacks the heavy themes of that season with biting humor and overall badassery. Admirably patient with relationship development, they let Emma and Regina have their back and forth with a very realistic rhythm that’s worth checking out.

Bonus points for a wraith scene that was creepy, violent, and had me sitting up in bed like OMG, IS POOKIE OKAY?!

The One Who Rides Through the Wind and the Night by MpSkyfall

Summary: A mysterious fever begins to strike the children of Storybrooke seemingly at random. As the children, including Henry, run temperatures high enough to cause delirium, Regina must confront, alongside her wife Emma, a ghost from the past she thought she had buried.

Why it has me HEAVING: Set in the time period where Emma is the Dark One, this fic answers the question of what if Emma remained the Dark One and she and Regina were married? Well, some saucy circumstances and a whole lot of exploring both the darkest and lightest sides of ourselves through poetry, is what. MpSkyfall has somehow managed to meld together spooky and sweet by having our ladies encounter an ominous new villain while simultaneously navigating through the (shockingly tasty sans the poison) cookbook of a former-Dark One. So far with the updates, the ball has really started to get rolling. Well, it’s more like a boulder, and you know what- I’ll happily let it roll over me cause this story is fun.

Before the Crown by alyssa_gibson

Summary: Before the crown took everything from her, Regina found freedom in stolen walks through the woods, quiet moments in the stables, and a girl named Emma Swan. (AU where Regina and Emma meet in the Echanted Forest as teens)

Why it has me HEAVING: What truly captured my attention to this story was the the absolute brilliant way alyssa_gibson portrayed Cora /before/ she even physically entered the story. Her presence was felt rather than seen in an eery way that had me clutching some pearls and by the time she showed up- the author pulled together a cold, villainously pragmatic Cora that caused me to lose a few fingernails. Emma and Regina’s dynamic is utterly heart-wrenching in its innocent authenticity as they slowly get to know each other before life sweeps them up and the story really gets gasp-worthy. I could keep gushing, but then I would be giving too much away. Updates every Wednesday, 10/10 no notes.

Again, if you haven't already- please do send me your WIPs or even your finished fics that you're proud of.

RIP YOUR INBOX,

MLEther

Well hi hello there, we are WIP'd... with recommendations...

I come bearing gifts of recommendations- and they are mostly WIPs. If you have ever had the (questionably fortunate) opportunity have having me grace your inbox, then you know I'm, uh... thorough and that I am a HUGE fan of supporting WIPs. These are not in any particular order other than the time in which I read and bookmarked them:

Let's start things off saucy, yes?

The Sweetest Taste by kurtsvonneslut

Summary: Storybrooke College's fine arts program is one of the best in the country. When Emma Swan gets in off the waitlist, she doesn't hesitate before moving herself and her two-year-old son across the country to attend. However, when she meets the infamous Dr. Mills, all her plans are thrown out the window. How far will she go to impress her strangely alluring professor? And does forbidden fruit indeed taste the sweetest?

Why this has me HEAVING: I'm not going to lie, this is the first professor/student SQ fic I've ever read so I'm a little unseasoned with comparisons, HOWEVER... the dynamic between them has me in a choke hold. If you've ever read anything by kurtsvonneslut, then you know they are an absolute legend at creating tension. The initial attraction between our two leading ladies reads naturally with their lives slowly being dished out making us realize just why this risky decision of theirs carries the weight that it does. And gah'DAMN is it saucy and the sauce is good. Also, bonus points for an extremely adorable rendition of toddler Henry.

If WIPs aren't your thing, kurtsvonneslut literally has 83 other works for you to sift through including a whole slew of one-shots that are thought provoking and challenging, but if you're in the mood for something a bit longer- I would recommend Change With the Seasons

Now onto some pining...

If I had the chance (I'd ask the world to dance) by hideousskirtconvention

(They do post their work here, but in case you missed it... here it is.)

Summary: Regina is Queen of the United Realms, and Emma has grown used to telling herself she’s just busy, until she realizes Regina has been spending every Friday night somewhere Emma was never invited.

Unable to let it go, Emma goes looking for answers.

Why this has me HEAVING: The author has such a wonderful sense for our two leading ladies, reading their words almost feels like hearing them speak. They are absolutely outstanding at writing Emma -is-an-adorable-oblivious-dumb-dumb-until-it-matters and when the realization finally happens it's a moment that'll have you floppin' around and kickin' your little legs with joy because hideousskirtconvention is fabulous at dangling that treat above your head and then throwing you a juicy steak.

Again, if WIPs are something you ain't into well you're in luck because hideousskirtconvention recently finished this absolutely stunning story: Home, where my love lies waiting and let me tell you, there aren't enough chefs to kiss this fic.

Now onto the EF AU section...

Golden Years by KnottyPineSQ

Summary: What happens when you mix:

  1. A magical tree malfunction

  2. A Regina who decided not to sacrifice the heart of the one she loved most

  3. A dark one who eventually found what he’d lost but still wants revenge for being made to wait longer than he should have

  4. A young, rebellious, orphan Emma and her friends who decide to pull a con in a dead man’s armor

That’s right: A SwanQueen Enchanted Forest AU (very) loosely based on ‘A Knight’s Tale’

Why it has me HEAVING: They say, "loosely based" and they mean, "loosely based," because the only similarities is a wee chunk of narrative setup at the beginning- other than that it is a full-blown EF SQ banquet. From the beginning it had me waiting eagerly for more and I am just crawling with antici..................................................................................................... pation.

Unfortunately they don't have any other works, so you'll have to double down your efforts to comment on every chapter because community, amiright?

I read fairly quickly and a lot, so I am also compiling another REC list that will be of recent works (i.e. written this summer). Happy Reading, Swen.

Sincerely,

Your Broken Inbox

p.s. send me your fics if you haven't already- some authors on here can back me up when I tell you that I am an avid commenter... and that's putting it mildly. *ahem*
