Working with surgeons who have disrespected you.

I use to work with this surgeon who I thought was cool, he had great music, he was fast. But, I would see him yell at people. Everyone on this team would walk on eggshells when they knew he was upset. It was awkward. Then, one day he yelled at me. I was just fixing instruments on my mayo so he wouldn’t have any issues using the navigated tap and he starts yelling at me. But he started yelling at my circulator first then the X-ray tech. Then throwing instruments at me. I also pre build 4 screws and then he ended up wanting bigger screws so I had to quickly remove the screws I built and rebuild the ones he wanted. I was so pissed I saw red and I couldn’t even setup our last case. He constantly yells and disrespects people. His PA who is one of the hardest working PAs I have ever met literally cries. The floor PAs have panic attacks when they have to work with him. I have talked to my manager and I told her I don’t feel safe working with him. They are constantly trying to put me in his room. But if it’s another tech who can’t work with a certain surgeon no problem. I was told he was supposed to apologize to me for his behavior never did. I wouldn’t mind working with him if he apologized. I can’t allow someone to think it’s ok to disrespect because others allow him to. Have you ever had to work with a surgeon you don’t feel safe working with? If so, how do you deal with it?

Hip scope any tips.

I have done two hip scopes at the surgery center. I worked at a few months ago. I was in orientation for one of them. The scrub who I was with said I did good and she didn’t need to scrub in with me. But I’m doing one at my new job. I’m rarely do sport cases( arthroscopy). After that it’s an ACL then a shoulder scope. My orientation was mostly ACL and shoulder(labrum repair) at the surgery center. I told my current charge I wanted to do more arthroscopy cases because it’s the only ortho specialty I rarely do and I don’t want to forget my skills. I’m kinda of in my head. I’m just use to doing total knees and spine it’s a different world when you’re in sports. They treat you like you’re an idiot and you can’t do a scope at my job it’s ridiculous. Any tips on getting better with cord management or general tips? I have been a scrub tech now for almost 3 years. I do complex spine cases and total revisions. But I would like to get out of my comfort zone and do more arthroscopy cases.

Scrub techs that say it’s MY Room/Doctor

I’m so over scrub techs claiming a surgeon is theirs and it’s their room. You understand if you quit you’re replaceable right? There is a traveler who works at my job and she claims this surgeon loves her. But he asks for me to be in his room. When he sees me in the hallways he is always asking why I’m not in his room. I mention the traveler wants to be in your room she likes you. I come to work to get a check it’s not that serious for me. I’m not going to fight (not literally ) over some surgeon. I always think people who are like that hate their personal life or don’t get enough attention. You have been scrubbing for 15 years and I know as someone scrubbing for almost 3 years that we are replaceable. It’s people like that that makes it difficult and it’s annoying. Just venting.

I suck at mixing cement. Do you have any tips to improve mixing?

I’m use to palacos cement it’s a different velocity than the simplex cement. And I can never get it right. It’s either too runny or too soft. I warm the monomer in warm saline and I think I mix for 45 secs. The issue is I’m usually in spine or with a doc who uses palacos. I just never been great at mixing cement. I would like to become better at. But should I mix for 2 mins? The I have the surgeon complaining it takes too long.

Surgeons who are obsessed with the scrub tech.

Have you heard of stories or know a surgeon who is obsessed with his scrub tech? When I first started my job one of my coworkers never scrubbed Ortho spine and I found out the surgeon would purposely say mean things to her and try to find ways to tell it her. It was so bad she requested to not work with him. And he would see her walk past his room and scrub out DURING a case to go to the front and request she be in his room. And then you have to typical dynamic where the everyone says this scrub and surgeon have a strange relationship. I’m curious because I started working with this surgeon no one wants to work with. He has become nicer because he knows no scrub wants to be in his room. But they started putting me with him everyday and he starts asking me questions about myself.Maybe I’m just too socially awkward but I find it weird him asking questions while he is doing surgery and saying it’s like we’re married . I started to be a bitch to him hoping it would get me out of his room. He told me he has been married too long I can’t hurt him. He tried to talk to me on my lunch break in the cafeteria. And circulators I work with have told me stuff that made me feel like I’m not crazy. ( I don’t think I’m hot stuff or the best scrub or anything. I literally try to make sure I do my job well and go home. I don’t talk during surgery unless it’s the usual people I work with.)

Having issues with closing count.

Recently I have had issues with the first count. One time I was missing a ray tech and it was stuck on the PAs gown. Second time it was a needle. Same PA Likes to slam the needle driver on the mayo. The needle popped off when he did it and the needle was on the floor. Third time, missing a lap. Haven’t even closed the capsule. Nurse immediately starts calling everyone instead of looking. It was in the trash. She proceeds to tell people and my manager I’m an idiot because I wouldn’t allow X-ray to come in. They haven’t closed the capsule. The surgeon was trying to figure out how to close the capsule after doing an I &D with a poly swap. How would a lap hide in a knee and the capsule isn’t closed? I’m making newbie mistakes and it’s getting to me. I try to keep count of everything. After this back to back I’m feeling not competent.
